    • Hans Paap, Junge Frau in Schwälmer (nordhessischer) Tracht, Ölgemälde der 1920er Jahre, gerahmt
      Nov. 03, 2023

Hans Paap, Junge Frau in Schwälmer (nordhessischer) Tracht, Ölgemälde der 1920er Jahre, gerahmt

      Est: €500 - €600

Hans Paap, Young Woman in Schwälmer (North Hessian) Traditional Costume, oil painting of the 1920s, framed Hans Paap, 1890 - Hamburg - 1967, here: Expressive three-quarter portrait of a young woman in "Schwälmer" traditional costume, next to her in a dark interior a jug with willow catkins on a bench, oil/cvas, 90 x 80 cm, signed on the left, expertly cleaned, in black framing About the artist: Hans Paap was a world traveller who worked as an artist in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, the Dominican Republic and the United States in Los Angeles, Taos and New York. Born in Hamburg, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich before moving to Mexico in his early twenties. He then returned to Germany for a few years - during which time the present painting was also created - until he emigrated to Los Angeles in 1928 and Taos/New Mexico in 1929. There his career was decisively shaped. When he arrived around 1929, the Taos Society of Artists had already disbanded. Its successes, however, had so strengthened the region's status as an international art colony that it attracted a second wave of artists and cultural greats such as Georgia O'Keeffe, John Sloan, Rebecca Salsbury James and others. These artists, as well as the land and people of the region, had a profound influence on Paap. Although Paap's first stay in Taos lasted only a couple of years, he eventually returned there in 1949 after stints in Portugal, displaced persons camps in Germany and two years of imprisonment on Ellis Island. In 1953, he moved to Hawaii. Over the next few years, he travelled from there to places all over Europe, Mexico and the United States, and even revisited Taos. At the end of his life, however, he returned to Germany and died in 1967 in his birthplace of Hamburg.

      Est: €1,280 - €1,600

Oil on canvas Germany/Argentina, 1920 Hans Paap (1884-1966) - Painter from Hamburg, who emigrated to New Mexico and later portrayed indigenous life Signed 'HANS PAAP' lower right Broad gallery frame Overall dimensions, framed: 70 x 80 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Lower Saxony Picturesque view of farmsteads rendered in bold harmonious colors; only few paintings from the early work of the rediscovered artist can be found on the international auction market The present painting by Hans Paap is part of the artist's early work and was painted around 1920. It depicts a South American country estate with several farmsteads surrounded by luscious greenery. Paap was fascinated by the rich culture and impressive landscape of Central and South America. In early 1920s he spent a lot of time in Argentina and Brazil before settling on the Mexican border. The present work offers a differentiated way of painting with translucent and opaque layers of paint as well as highlighted dabs of color that endow the composition with freshness and vitality. Paap was most likely also influenced by the painters of the Hamburg Secession and the 'Hamburgische Künstlerclub' and was certainly familiar with the work of its members Friedrich Schaper, Ernst Eitner and Arthur Illies - this influence is reflected in the present work. The painting is in very good condition. On the left margin there is a tiny, carefully restored tear (backed with a patch of canvas), which is not visible on the front. The work is signed 'HANS PAAP' lower right. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 70 x 80 cm, the stretcher frame measures 56.5 x 65.5 cm. Hans Paap (1884-1966) Hans Paap was born in Hamburg and worked as an art director for motion pictures in Berlin for a couple of years. After WWI, he spent over a decade in Argentina and Brazil. In 1928 Paap moved to California where he worked as a painter until the early 1930s. Thereafter he moved to New Mexico and became associated with the Taos art colony, a group of artists that were attracted by the culture of the Taos Pueblo and the beautiful landscape of New Mexico. Subsequently Paap became best known for his portraits of Native Americans, especially Taos Pueblo people. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
