Reminiscent of a Pablo Picasso cubist portrait, Andre Pace’s Artist Jury/Man speaks to the experience of the artist. The figure is split down the middle forming two distinct, competing halves of the body, personality, and identity. The halves coexist, and do so well enough to form a recognizable human face, though the figure’s body is contorted. Thus, Pace emphasizes the split mind of an artist, while simultaneously suggesting that the body facilitates that divide. By jury, Pace suggests that artists have the weight of posterity on their shoulders, and they act as full juries when determining their artistic output. ,,~ Lucy Siegel, Student at Bowdoin College, Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Government and Legal Studies, Center for Art Law Summer 2020 Intern. Artist's Biography Andre Pace is an American artist originally from New York, currently living in Arizona. He works primarily in oil and pastel on archive and thin cotton paper. Pace’s style can be most closely associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat, although, in his own words, his art is mainly influenced by such old masters as El Greco, Winslow Homer, and John Singer Sargent. Pace describes his work as a joyful experience, which contributes to a long conversation between artists and art lovers.,,Pace has participated in numerous exhibitions and art auctions throughout the United States and abroad. Of his work, Pace says, “My goal is to open a dialogue about art, not to change someone’s point of view. I think that art is always modern, just the manner is different from the old masters.” ,,For more of Pace’s work, please visit: https://www.artiosgallery.com/andre-pace

      ANDRE PACE (B. 1978) - FAMILY BUSINESS/I'LL COOK TONIGHT

      Est: $150 - $300

Lot 49 Andre Pace (b. 1978) Family Business/I'll cook tonight (2016) Oil, pastel, crayon, acrylic, watercolor 5” x 7” inches Yes inches Donated by The Artist This item ships from AZ 85007 10% of the net proceeds of the sale of this Artwork will be shared with the Artist. Family Business/I'll cook tonight blends the artistic traditions associated with Basquiat and Pace’s stated muses, El Greco, Homer, and Sargent. The colorful abstraction and figures pay homage to Basquiat, while the structure and subject matter allude to more traditional masters. The family, lounging in their sitting room or kitchen, engage in the familial activity of cooking together. The figures in the foreground add character to the composition by exposing the happy chaos associated with group cooking. The image of the family together relies on the artistic traditions of the 19th-century. Yet, the contemporary family cooks for themselves as they wrangle their children. Thus, Pace combines artistic traditions with a contemporary flare, creating a piece that speaks to the timelessness of family while highlighting the progress of the family unit. ,,~ Lucy Siegel, Student at Bowdoin College, Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Government and Legal Studies, Center for Art Law Summer 2020 Intern.
