His "barn works," (Green Barn Reflected, Oro Barns Seen from My Window etc.) including Red Barn Reflected, were conceived in this way. The block images and bold colours of computer graphics were transferred and transformed in paint. Like his iconic images of Queen Elizabeth, flags, and moose, the red barn is a quintessential symbol of Charles Pachter's Canadiana.

Pachter's ongoing search for Canadian symbols led to his claim that butter tarts were as indigenous to English Canada as croissants were to France, or doughnuts to the U.S.A. These handsome still-lifes recall motifs favoured by Roy Lichtenstein and Wayne Thiebaud among American Pop artists." In his second work, this lot, "...he situates the tart platter on a tall pedestal, aligned with the vertical and horizontal mullions of a multi-paned window in the background, creating a bold formal pattern of rectangles in contrast to the organic shapes of the tarts."Sold to benefit Historica Canada.

CHARLES PACHTER THE PAINTED FLAG, oil on canvas; signed and dated '84 26 ins x 24 ins; 65 cms x 60 cms Provenance: Private Collection, Toronto. Literature: Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, Charles Pachter, Toronto, 1992, pages 71, 84, 86-87 and colour plates 88-91 for other works from the artist's "The Painted Flag" series. Note: Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov discusses the Toronto artist's beginnings in depicting Canada's flag and the comparison of Pachter's "The Painted Flag" series to the depictions of the American flag by contemporary American artist, Jasper Johns: "In June of 1980, Pachter began a series of paintings which later eclipsed his streetcar and queen on moose themes in capturing the public imagination. After building an improvised flagpole on his Oro farm, he observed the different configurations produced by the rippling flag in rapid succession. He photographed hundreds of variations for later reference. This approach was different from that of American artist Jasper Johns, whose unmodulated grid-like studies of the American flag were seen less as patriotic symbols than as points of departure for formal abstractions. In contrast, Pachter painted the Canadian flag hovering in the air, observed from various angles and distances with emphasis on light and shadow. In variations on this theme, Pachter alternated the scale of the flag to pole, or abandoned the pole altogether. He also introduced different background shades of blue and improbable hues such as black and pink, suffusing "The Painted Flags" with an aura that extended far beyond the moment captured."

For close to forty years, the moose has been a signature subject for Pachter, the "Monarch of the North" having become a true icon of Canadian Pop Art. Pachter, in "M Is For Moose," describes some of the experiences which led him to develop his unique and powerful depictions of his Canada, remembering "when I was a fine arts student in university, it was often suggested to me by patronizing professors that the Canada of my imagination was not as important as the iconography from other places. If it came from elsewhere, it was consequential. If it came from here, not. So I began to draw, paint, and make prints in which I wanted to make Canada look cool, elegant, interesting, even "glamorous," and put it on a level playing field with all those other countries I was told were more worthy of notice. My experience was similar to that of many other visual artists, composers, and writers. Each of us has created a Canada that is unique, based on our accumulated life experiences, where we happen to live, who our friends are." While Pachter's earlier paintings of the moose usually depicted the animal along with the Queen, he eventually came to focus on it as a solitary icon. The dancing silhouette of the moose made its first appearance in 1975's Look Out Barbara Ann. However it was Tour De Force I, 1987 which first depicted the agile creature in an urban setting, atop the second level of a concrete diving platform. Tour De Force II followed in 1988, depicting the moose carefully but confidently walking a tightrope above Toronto's CN Tower. With Tour De Force I and II, Welsh-Ovcharov called the two paintings Pachter's "zenith with moose imagery", noting that both works "confirm the undaunted determination of the monarch of the north to establish its domain within urban Canada by a display of sure-footed acrobatic ability, leaving its subjects awestruck". We extend our thanks to Charles Pachter for providing important information in the cataloguing of this work.

Charles Pachter 1942 - Canadian acrylic on canvas Flag 36 x 24 inches 91.4 x 61 centimeters signed and dated 1998 and on verso signed and dated Provenance:Private Collection, Toronto Charles Pachter began The Painted Flag series in 1980, beginning with studies of his own Canadian flag mounted on an improvised pole on his southern Ontario farm. His first exhibition of large flag paintings took place in 1981 in a remarkable space - a former supermarket, transformed by the artist into what was probably the first art gallery to settle on Toronto's Queen Street West strip. Pachter has returned to this subject often since then, and his depictions of it have evolved into true portraits of a significant Canadian symbol. He has captured the myriad wind-borne movements of the cloth rectangle, sometimes allowing it to fly free of its anchoring pole, turning it in all directions and placing it on minimalist backdrops ranging from brilliant blue to sombre black. In this work, the viewer stands far below the flag, making it seem a delicate swatch of fabric struggling to free itself from the towering, foreshortened flagpole.

Charles Pachter 1942 - Canadian acrylic and pastel on canvas Love Pat 24 x 35 3/4 inches 61 x 90.8 centimeters signed and on verso signed Literature:Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, Charles Pachter, 1992, page 1 Provenance:Private Collection, Toronto Charles Pachter's aesthetic persona is eloquently summed up by Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, the author of the monograph devoted to the first 30 years of his career: "With continuing grand gestures infrequently seen in the often skeptical Canadian art world, he has staked out cultural territory of his own and celebrated it unabashedly. Much of his work is an apparent contradiction, for he is a serious-minded humourist.....he possesses the gift to be poignant and roguish at once." Published in 1992, that statement still provides an apt introduction to Pachter's images, so many of which - like his 1972 painting, Noblesse Oblige: Queen on Moose - have endured as iconic symbols of the culture and personality of Canada. In this more recent take on two of Canada's symbols of majesty, Pachter's image invites us to imagine a warm greeting between a citizen-beast and a smiling Queen, both sporting their finest headgear, set against a reminder of this country's cold northern landscape.
