      FRED LITTLE PACKER (1886-1956) BEWARE OF THIS BIRD! / DON'T LET THIS "CUCKOO" DESTROY OUR NEST! Circa 1945. 41x26 3/4 inches, 104x68 cm. Bressler Editorial Cartoons, New York. Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses, sharp creases, and restoration in margins; minor creases and abrasions in image. Fred Packer graduated from the Chicago Art Institute in 1906, then joined the staff of the Los Angeles Examiner as an artist for the Sunday supplements. He worked as a commercial artist on book and magazine illustrations until 1931, after which he became a cartoonist for publications such as the New York Journal, the New York American, and the Daily Mirror. Packer received a Pulitzer prize in 1952 for his political cartoon criticizing President Truman.

Packer was born in suburban Los Angeles, California and was educated in the Los Angeles Public Schools, Los Angeles School of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. With the exception of twelve years in the commercial art field, he has devoted his career to newspaper work, starting with the "Los Angeles Examiner" and San Francisco "Call-Post."

He was educated in the Los Angeles Public Schools, Los Angeles School of Art, and Chicago Art Institute. With the exception of twelve years in the commercial art field, he has devoted his career to newspaper work, starting with the "Los Angeles Examiner" and San Francisco "Call-Post".As a protege of Arthur Brisbane, for whom he had worked on the "New York Journal" and "New York American", Packer came to the "New York Daily Mirror" in 1932 and has been associated with this newspaper ever since as the Editorial Cartoonist. He died December 8, 1956.His cartoons and posters for the World War II defense effort earned him citations from the Treasury Deptatment and the War Production Board. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize on May 5, l952 for his Truman Cartoon, "Your Editors ought to have more sense than to print what I say", which appeared in the "New York Mirror" of October 6, 1951. In August 1953, he was invited by the Library of Congress to make a gift of his original drawings to its permanent collection.
