GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822 - 1885). Autograph letter signed ("U. S. Grant") as Lt. General, City Point, VA, 5 September 1864. Three pages, bifolium, 125 x 202mm, on Head Quarters Armies of the United States letterhead (separated folds and file holes filled in with tissue, one fold impacting signature). Grant thanks his retiring aide-de-camp for his services during "...the rebellion now being waged against free government." The general offers his highest recommendation for Lt. Orlando H. Ross, in a glowing acceptance of his resignation: "it gives me pleasure to bear testimony to the services you have rendered to the country through three years of the rebellion now being waged against free government. As Assistant Special Agent of the Post Office Dept., the Western Army was deeply indebted for the order and regularity established, more by your labor and energy than that of any other person, in conducting their Mail through a hostile country. In that capacity you excelled. It will afford me pleasure to recommend you for a similar position in the Civil service of the Government should you desire it. In all positions you have been placed in as Aide-de-Camp you have shown a commendable energy and zeal which if continued in civil life will make you friends and secure to you and family a competency through life. Bespeaking for your success and enjoyment after more than three years service in the tented field." Ross, who was also Grant's cousin, was appointed the special messenger at Grant's headquarters in 1861. Later that year, Ross would be placed in charge of military mail for the Army of the Tennessee, and in October 1862, Ross would be commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the 20th Illinois Infantry. Months later, he accepted a promotion to captain as part of Grant's staff, in which he served as Grant's aide-de-camp until his resignation in September 7, 1863. (Heitman) Grant's wartime correspondence was largely impersonal and purpose-oriented; his letters seldom revealed his innermost feelings or emotions, especially during the war period. Thus, written accounts of his motivations and aspirations for fighting for the Union are very rare and moving. We could not find another example of Grant's use of the phrase "free government" during the war years, and Grant used it very sparingly throughout his life, including during his 1870 message to Congress announcing ratification of the 15th Amendment and in his 1874 Thanksgiving Proclamation. This letter appears to be unpublished and does not appear in the Grant Papers. Sold with a carte-de-visite portrait photograph.

For 18 months Nelson lived in a ménage-à-trois with the Hamiltons, moving them at a time of trouble, along with the King and Queen of Naples to the relative safety of Palermo. It was here in 1798, not long after the present letter was written, that Sir William Hamilton began to be concerned by his wife’s drinking and increasingly indiscreet behaviour. It appeared to him that Emma was always at the gambling table with Nelson seated directly behind her, seemingly egging her on. These profuse habits led her into debt, with the money she would inherit upon the death of her husband and later, of Nelson, only leading to more gambling and extravagance. Hamilton would spend a year in prison for these debts, and upon her release in 1813, escaped her creditors in England for refuge in Calais. She died there in distress if not in want in 1815.

MEADE, George Gordon (1815-1872), Major General. Autograph letter signed ("Geo. G. Meade"), to Brigadier General William Farrar Smith ("Baldy"), Head Quarters, Army of the Potomac, 11 December 1863. 3 pages, 8vo, integral blank. "IF YOU EVER HAVE THE MISFORTUNE TO GET COMMAND OF AN ARMY...I TRUST...YOU WILL HAVE BETTER LUCK THAN I HAVE FOUND" MEADE BLAMES HIS SUBORDINATES FOR HIS FAILURE TO PURSUE LEE'S ARMY AFTER GETTYSBURG. A most unusual letter of Meade, predicting he will "have my head cut off" and be retired in disgrace for his failure to exploit the Union victory and take advantage of Lee's flight. He thanks Smith for his his "complimentary notice of my official report of Gettysburgh. I regret very much that the paragraph referring to yourself & Crouch was not so satisfactory. I assure it was my desire to make it so....That you considered yourself removed from Genl. Couch's orders I was not aware of, as in fact Genl. Couch had by the news of the Genl. in Chief been placed under my orders with his whole command." He congratulates Smith on his success at Chattanooga, and adds "Before this reaches you, you will have learned of the unfortunate results of my late movements...I do not know whether the facts of the case will ever become public, but I may say here that what I considered well laid plans were frustrated by the slowness & incompetence of subordinates upon whose action their execution depended. I am in daily expectation of having my head cut off, and numerous scriveners assign as my successor one of the Generals now with you. I trust I shall be able to bear my retirement with as much fortitude & equableness as I have my elevation." For 10 agonizing days Lincoln hoped Meade would renew his attack: "If Gen. Meade can complete his work so gloriously prosecuted thus far, by the literal or substantial destruction of Lee's army, the rebellion will be over." But Meade had been badly shaken by the carnage and moved too slowly, allowing Lee to slip back into Virginia. "Our army held the war in the hollow of their hand," a distraught Lincoln complained, "and they would not close it!"

Etc. ((09118.))
