PAGET, Sidney (British, 1860-1908). Paget's personal dressing gown with two patch pockets and cord. [England: ca. 19th century]. Man's light brown wool dog-toothed thick tweed dressing gown with cord with tassel ends; one (of two) original pockets. Two buttons with corresponding button holes, small chain on inner collar for hanging, remnant of label (heavily worn) and another small (later) label both on inner collar. Size approximately man's large. Approximately 5' long. Numerous moth-holes and other damage, some soiling, lining no longer present. One pocket missing, two patches inside gown near missing pocket, one small, later label in two pieces ("L. R. Paget" indicating ownership of Paget's son, Leslie Robert (b. 1894) he most likely inherited this gown upon his father's death). This dressing gown served as the inspiration for Paget's illustrations of Holmes wearing a dressing gown in at least six illustrations (out of a total of 13 illustrations of Holmes in a dressing gown). In 1952 to 1979, this gown was loaned by Paget's family for display at the reconstruction of Holmes' rooms at 221B Baker Street at The Sherlock Holmes Pub, on a partial mannequin of Holmes. There is a persistent (though unverified) rumor that this gown was given to Paget by Arthur Conan Doyle. This gown previously appeared at auction at Sotheby's (Thursday, July 24, 1980, lot 266), from the collection of Miss Winifred Paget and Rev. John R. Paget (two of Paget's other children). With two black and white photos (8 x 10") of the gown on display at The Sherlock Holmes Pub.

PAGET, Sidney (British, 1860-1908). In the Tyrol. [Ca. 19th century - early 20th century]. Watercolor painting on board. Signed near lower right corner. Mat captioned in an unknown hand. Sight 20 1/2 x 34". Matted 29 x 42 1/2 ". Some wear, dampstaining on mat. Watercolor is fine. Paget is best known for his numerous illustrations for the original Sherlock Holmes stories, which have guided the appearance of later illustrations, stage presentations, films and television versions of Holmes. Although this artwork isnâ€™t part of his Holmes oeuvre, original artwork by Paget is uncommon.
