Charles Paine (1895-1967) was a versatile and prolific designer, who drew on his training in stained glass to create bold, structured and highly stylised posters for a variety of companies. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1919, Paine left London to work for the Applied Art Department of Edinburgh College of Art. Paine’s immediate superior was the distinguished printmaker John Platt (1886-1967) and they had a marked influence on each other’s work. It is thought that Platt introduced him to Frank Pick at the London Underground for whom he was to design 31 posters.

CHARLES PAINE (1895-1967) AUTUMN IN WELWYN. 1939. 29 1/2x19 3/4 inches, 75x50 1/4 cm. The Baynard Press, London. Condition A: expert air brushing in margins. "A constant feature of Paine's work was the use of animal imagery. The choice of the four seasons to advertise Welwyn on the Underground emphasized its all-year-round appeal but in his choice of design he avoided the obvious option of picturesque houses set in lovely countryside. Instead he produced four remarkably modern animal images: a lamb and snowdrops for spring, insects around what looks like a daffodil for summer, a red squirrel for the autumn and hares in the snow and a chaffinch for winter. . . the execution implies an educated audience" (https://charles-paine-arca.blog/2017/11/07/posters-welwyn-garden-city/).

Condition A-: small repaired tears and restoration at edges; small replaced punch hole in upper left margin; light foxing in lower text. While Paine lived in Welwyn Garden City, he was commissioned by the local development company to create a series of posters promoting the locale as a place to buy or rent homes. He had previously used the "the traditional image of nesting birds as a metaphor for starting a new family in a new home" for the London Underground in 1930 (London Transport p. 125); he revisits that motif here with the added emphasis on "home" by depicting the scene through a curtained window.

Charles Paine (1895-1967) The cr‚hous drawing with wash on board, 69cm x 90cm Provenance from the Paine family as being Charles Paine's last work before his death in '67. This study of the sky and tide was to him subliminal, through his own use of technique and composition. Paine was inspired by not only the visual but the recurrent relationships of the Bach fugue juxtaposed with the cross-current of the sea and the surrounding elements. This is evident in the continuing geometric style of this piece. Although Paine died before 'completion', he had noted that even unfinished, the piece would be worthy of display.

Condition A- / B+: repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins, some affecting text. Another markedly progressive poster by Paine, this one announcing a traditional British event. "Trooping the colour" marks the official celebration of the reigning British Monarch's birthday. Paine's artistic career began as an apprentice working with stained glass. The majority of the posters he designed in 1921 and 1922 reflect this discipline, as they employ simple, bold images and planes of flat color. All of his posters were marked by a sense of progressive and modernist design.
