Chardin, Paris DESCRIPTION: Rising like untamed spin art from a carnival color wheel, La Jolie Théro launches her way into an unbridled flamenco, castanets at the ready and arched in sultry abandon. It’s a superb tonal whirlwind from Pal, and one more than equal to the designs he created for another Spanish dancer who must have been influenced by this particular choice of stage name: La Belle Otero (see PAI-LI, 455 and PAI-LXVI, 422). Rare! (Art Nouveau; Dance)

Paul Dupont, Paris DESCRIPTION: Ladies, take note: in the case of unwanted male attention, simply don a pair of newfangled getaway shoes. At least, Pal's imaginative scene would suggest as much—a hapless passerby has been knocked right off his feet at the shocking sight of this early prototype for roller blades. Over eighty years later, roller blades would become choice accessories for exercise, but in the 19th century, Pal was not concerned with workout trends; the product was merely an excuse to create another graphic vixen, which he does here with sophisticated understatement. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image; minor losses at edges, abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Alois Senefelder's art form, a big exhibition was organized at the Gallery Rapp near the Eiffel Tower. Four posters were commissioned, each representing a different aspect of lithographic art. Puvis de Chavannes, the president of the influential Societe des Beaux-Arts was one of the artists chosen, as was Maurou, a printmaker. The other two posters were designed by poster artists, thus demonstrating the importance of poster art in the history of lithography. Hugo d'Alèsi chose to represent an elegant lady at a second-hand bookseller along the Seine (she is admiring a lithograph and a poster by Chéret). Pal took an approach more in keeping with his recognized style. As usual, he depicts one of his scantily clad and fetching models. However, if in his more commercial posters his young ladies appear exceptionally provocative, this one is placed in a creative posture - seated in front of a lithographic stone on an easel with a lithographic pencil in one hand. This is the version before text. DFP-II 683 (var), L'Affichomanie no. 25 (var).

Note the especially fine artistry on Columbine's black lace ruffles. Cusenier, a French spirits producer founded in 1868, was acquired by Pernod-Ricard in the late 1970s. (Art Nouveau; Alcohol)

Paul Dupont, Paris DESCRIPTION: “Rarely has a product so humdrum as a kerosene lamp been promoted with such uninhibited zest—but then Pal, given free rein to his imagination, could be relied on to come up with something featuring one of his incomparably alluring nymphs every time. The secret of his success is the fact that even though he makes it clear in some way... that these are purely imaginary spirits, the loving care with which he draws every curve and flesh tone gives them a sensuality much too solid for make believe” (Gold, p. 17). The owner clearly recognized fine talent: two months later that same year, he gave Steinlen his first important show. Uncharacteristically for Pal, the design is done solely in sepia and pale green. Paul Dupont, Paris DESCRIPTION: “The Olympia opened in Paris in April of 1893 as the first establishment to call itself a ‘music-hall’—a term borrowed from British vaudeville which soon made its way into French vocabulary. From the start, the Olympia exploited feminine allure for all it was worth; whatever its various revues were called, they always featured beautiful girls in revealing costumes” (Gold, p. 112). Pal created numerous designs for the venue, including this charming image for the Doll Fairy. (Art Nouveau; Cabaret)

Paul Dupont, Paris DESCRIPTION: The perennially lovelorn commedia dell'arte clown Pierrot finally turns the tables on Columbina: he's speeding off on Phébus' motorized tricycle, bidding a cheerful adieu to his beau and her bicyclette. By 1899, the "bicycle craze" of the previous decade, with all the overtures toward greater female independence, was morphing into the Automobile Age, and this poster finds the Phébus brand in the midst of this transition. With its hints of Theseus abandoning Ariadne on Naxos (we, as Dionysus, are here to comfort her), this is a magnificent work of bold, tender, and curious emotions. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)

But this original large-format printing has vibrant coloration and exquisite detail that we rarely see—note our Valkyrie's chain-mail miniskirt, with textured rings and metallic shimmer. Pal's triumph here is the culmination of the "Bicycle Craze" of the 1890s, which indeed delivered liberation for female riders and sparked the modern women's rights movement. This is the rare and larger two-sheet poster. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)
