      • Francisco Pallas y Puig (attributed to) Large triptych in wood and bone, late 19th century
        Nov. 12, 2024

Francisco Pallas y Puig (attributed to) Large triptych in wood and bone, late 19th century

        Est: €1,800 - €3,000

Francisco Pallas y Puig (attributed to) Cuart de Poblet 1859-Valencia 1926 Large triptych in wood and bone, late 19th century above, in the side doors, the profiles of Charles VIII of Valois and his wife Anne of Brittany Since the work is not a copy of an existing original but rather an original in its own right, it must be considered as a late nineteenth-century example "in style", to be ascribed to the hand, the historicizing imagination and the neo-Gothic passion of the Spanish artist Francisco Pallas Y Puig. Francisco Pallás y Puig was a Catalan art restorer; he studied drawing and modeling at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia and in the last years of his studies he worked as an operator in the Salvador Montesinos Valencian fan factory, where he carved ivory wands for luxury fans. It was during this period that he acquired the best knowledge for the delicate use of manual cutting tools, such as the burin, creating pieces with the smallest details. He subsequently worked in various areas of Spain, specializing in carving wood and bone in Romanesque and Gothic styles. 57x26x8 cm - total weight gr. 5284 Reference bibliography: Adolph Goldschmidt, Pseudo-Gothic Spanish Ivory Triptychs of the Nineteenth Century in «The Journal of the Walters Art Gallery», Vol. 6 (1943), pp. 48-59, The Walters Art Museum Richard H. IMPRESSIVE GOTHIC STYLE CARVED IVORY TRIPTYCH, C 1890. Comprising a large and impressive pseudo-Late Gothic parcel gilt and painted bone, ivory, ebony and inlaid wood triptych depicting the life of the Virgin attributed to Francisco Pallas y Puig (1859-1926), Valencia, late 19th century. The central panel depicting the Virgin and Child at center flanked by musical angels beneath an ornately carved overhanging baldacchino the corners mounted with the four Evangelists. The lower section carved with the pre Annunciation and Annunciation scenes all within a frame of carved vines interspersed with dragons. The upper portion of right wing carved with the Presentation in the Temple and below the Adoration of the Shepherds. The upper margins with relief carved Renaissance-style busts set in quatrefoils and in each corner a Heraldic shield. Extending across the base of all three panels is the inlaid ivory inscription: SIT NOMEN VIRG. MARIAE BENEDICTUM IN SAECULA (Blessed be the Name of the Virgin Mary Forever) in a Gothic script, and the wood frame decorated in marquetry of inlaid wood and ivory, an Arabic style. The oak case set with hand wrought figural hardware. Overall open 24 inches x 26.25 inches (61cm x 66.5cm). Stunning! No international shipping and shipping restrictions to some states. Published: The Art News, June 1925, page 2 illustrated. In the late 18th century, antiquarian interests in the ancient and medieval past brought about a fascination and a demand for ivories and related objects in the Gothic style that intensified in the 19th century with the increasing romantic idealization of the Middle Ages. While many ivories were intentionally carved merely to evoke the Gothic era, some were carved as forgeries intended to be sold as authentic medieval works of art. The present lot strongly resembles a rectangular triptych in the collection of the Walters Art Gallery, dating before 1895 (see Randall, op. cit., no. 483, pp. 318-319). This triptych (and also other similar works) has been ascribed by noted Gothic art historian Adolph Goldschmidt (1863-1944) to Francisco Pallas y Puig (1859-1923), a Valencian sculptor identified by Manuel Gómez Moreno as the 19th century source for various (then) modern works in the Romanesque and Mozarabic styles (“Los Marfiles Cordobeses y sus Derivaciones”, Archivo Espanol de Arte y Arqueologia IX (1927), 233 ff.). Whereas Goldschmidt, Gómez Moreno and Henry Walters gently considered Pallas y Puig as an artist “who tries to express his own ideas using an earlier style rather than as a forger attempting to falsify by slavishly imitating earlier objects”, others are less generous, plainly branding the sculptor a forger. Francisco Pallás y Puig was a Catalan art restorer who studied drawing and modeling at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia and later worked in different areas of Spain. He began by carving wood and eventually came to work in ivory all kinds of styles. IMPORTANT NOTICE: INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING IS NOT available for this item. Francisco Pallás y Puig (Quart de Poblet, Valencia 1859-Valencia 1926)

        Est: €9,000 - €12,000

Francisco Pallás y Puig (Quart de Poblet, Valencia 1859-Valencia 1926) Imposing neo-gothic carved ivory triptych depicting the life of Christ, topped with a coat of arms. The whole of the altarpiece is bordered with delicate and detailed vine leaves, angels holding scrolls of parchment and busts of different characters. The doors at the side are decorated with contrasting wood and ivory certosina inlay forming a frieze which edges the doors. The interiors of the doors are decorated with ivory marquetry on tortoiseshell plaques on which there is Latin text. The exterior is made of carved wood with iron fittings bordered with an ebony and ivory contour, a small part of which remains. This is a magnificent example of Pallàs´ elaborate, detailed and magnificent quality of work on this type of portable altar, which is the reason why some of his work is kept in the best museums in the world. Open measurements: 55,5 x 70 cm. Central section measurements: 51 x 32 cm. Closed measurements: 55,5 x 35 cm. He began by making sticks for brisé fans and soon became a master of imitation of all styles in ivory. As indicated in his biographical details at the Prado Museum: "…Don Manuel Gómez Moreno believes him to be responsible “perhaps entirely” for all the Arab ivory imitations” the demand for which came mainly from New York and Frankfurt and which he could barely keep up with before the war.” He participated in various international exhibitions (Paris and USA) and was awarded various prizes: He was awarded a first class medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona in 1896 for a magnificent chest. In the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, he was given an honorable mention for an ivory sculpture: "The Alexandrian Wars", also and the Spanish exhibition of Mexican decorative arts and industries in 1910, he was awarded a medal and a commemorative diploma. - There is a very similar triptych to this one at the Louvre Museum in Paris, with the inventory ref.
