SWAPAN KUMAR PALLEY (1953-), INDIANUNTITLEDAcrylic on canvas; signed lower right, signed verso30" x 30" — 76.2 x 76.2 cm.Note:Swapan Palley studied at the Indian School of Arts and Draughtsmanship in Calcutta, continuing his studies under the tutelage of eminent artist, Prokash Karmakar. Palley has been keenly influenced in his career by the cave paintings of Ajanta, constructed in the second century BCE, which are considered masterpieces of Buddhist religious art. His palette takes its cue from the quality of light displayed in the Ajanta works which creates an often dreamlike effect on the paintings, yet his stated intent is to show the range of women’s emotions and experiences. Mythological depictions of women are a consistent theme in Palley’s practice. Of his own works of this subject, the artist has stated, “Women with their simple, soft and graceful characteristics inspire me specially. I cannot resist the temptation of portraying these women’s joy, and sufferings for unfulfilled wishes, love and mystery."
