    • Pauline Lennards Palmer (1867 - 1938) American
      May. 30, 2024

      Pauline Lennards Palmer (1867 - 1938) American

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Pauline Palmer (1867 - 1938) Oil on canvas, signed lower right "Pauline Palmer" piece measures 18 x 14 1/2 inches. Born in McHenry, Illinois, Pauline Lennard studied for six years at the Art Institute of Chicago School, and also in Paris, most notably with the American Richard E. Miller. In 1891, she married Dr. Albert Palmer of Chicago, and between 1900 and 1914, the couple made numerous trips to Europe. Pauline painted in France at Auvers, Pont Aven, and Giverny; in Italy, she painted in Venice and Verona. The Palmers also traveled through Germany and Austria. For many years, the Palmers maintained a summer home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where Pauline studied with Charles Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art, and protégé of William Merritt Chase. Palmer was an active participant in Chicago art organizations. She was a member of the Chicago Municipal Art League, Chicago Art Guild, Chicago Women’s Salon, and she was director of the Chicago Drama League. In 1918, she served as the first woman president of the Chicago Society of Artists, and in 1927 she was elected President of The Art Institute Alumni Association. She also served as President of the Chicago Association of Painters and Sculptors from 1929 to 1931. Palmer maintained an extremely active exhibition schedule throughout her life. From 1896 until her death in 1938, she participated (often with as many as eight entries) in nearly every annual at the Art Institute of Chicago, and won most of the museum’s awards and prizes over the years. She was invited to show her work at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art Biennials of 1916 and 1926. She also participated in expositions in Buffalo (1901), St. Louis (1904), and San Francisco (1915). Though she maintained her Chicago residence throughout her life, Palmer spent almost every summer in the old whaling port of Provincetown, which must have reminded her of the quaint fishing villages she had painted in Brittany. After her husband’s death in 1919, Palmer became a virtual resident of the Cape, painting the dunes, beaches, the local residents (especially the families of the Portuguese fisherman), her garden, and her studio.

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Pauline Palmer (American, 1867-1938), "Portrait of a Baby", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 12 1/4 in. x 10 3/8 in., framed, overall 15 3/4 in. x 13 5/8 in. x 1 1/2 in. Note: Known as “Chicago’s Painter Lady,” Pauline Palmer was arguably the best-known woman artist of her time in the city. She was born in McHenry, IL and attended school in Milwaukee before teaching art in Chicago’s public schools. Her marriage in 1891 to a prosperous physician enabled her to undertake a fulltime career as an artist. Palmer studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and spent three years attending art academies in Paris. Upon her return to Chicago in 1902, Palmer opened a portrait studio and became an integral part of the city’s art scene. She exhibited regularly at the Art Institute’s three annual exhibitions and in important national and international exhibitions, including the Paris Salon. Her first solo show was held at the Art Institute in 1913. A leader among local artists, she was the first woman to serve as president of the Chicago Society of Artists between 1918 and 1921, and she led the Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors from 1929 to 1931. Beginning in 1915, Palmer spent her summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, a popular seasonal colony for both traditional and modernist painters. In addition to portraits, she painted numerous studies of women and children as well as landscapes. Ref.: “Pauline Palmer (1867-1938).” M. Christine Schwartz Collection. www.schwartzcollection.com. Palmer stayed committed to Impressionism throughout her career and trained with many important American Impressionists including William Merritt Chase, Frank Duveneck and Charles Webster Hawthorne. She completed her early training at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago in the 1890s with Chase and Duveneck. Subsequently, Palmer spent a great deal of time traveling in Europe and staying at artist colonies like Giverny. In her later years, she mainly stayed stateside in Chicago and Provincetown, spending time with Hawthorne at his Provincetown school as of 1915. Significant awards and recognition came regularly throughout her career, and the Art Institute of Chicago held a memorial exhibition of her work in 1939. The Provincetown Art Colony is one of the longest continuing artist colonies in the world and played an important role in the development of American Impressionism. It is first two summer schools were opened by Impressionists Charles Webster Hawthorne in 1899 and E. Ambrose Webster in 1900. It swelled during World War I when many expats who had been living in European artist colonies like Giverny returned to the States. Palmer's paintings of its summer streets are emblematic of the time, highlighting the bright summer light that the town was hailed for as well as its quaintness before it became the tourist mecca it is known for today.
