Pankhurst (Sylvia) Pankhurst (Sylvia) Autograph letter signed ('Sylvia P') to her friend Clara Gilbert Cole, fellow suffragist, anarchist and poet. The letter reads "I didn't know when and if I shall have to go. I agreed I would go and speak for a mothers society if and when the invitation came. Too long to tell oil the involved details, but I just wanted to be sure that I should be able to feel Richard would be safe if I went. Indeed, dear Clare, I cannot think of anyone beside yourself I could appeal to in such a matter Mrs Brimley can't because her husband is quite helpless without her and one could not uproot her. I can't think of anyone else who could and would and whom I should feel he would be safe with. Do ask for my book at [the] local free library and ask six other friends in various localities to do the same. One asks for a suggestion form and fills it up: name of author, name of publisher, any papers where noticed or reviewed. In this case Times, Times Literary Supplement, Star, Doily Telegraph, Evening Standard, Daily Herald etc. etc. etc., practically every paper. They have not had such a press for any book for a long time but few can afford the guinea. I fear for the sales and that the publisher may avoid such books in the future. I am so sorry to learn that Mr Cole has not been well. My dear Mrs Payne has lost her husband. They married at 19 and are now towards the seventies so it has been a big blow to her and she is broken down with nursing and needs taking care of. Yet she won't leave herself away even for a day. These people upstairs all say they have the flu. Certainly they have terrible coughs fear a bit for my Richard. However one must hope for the best...P.S. This moment discovered this letter been lying her for days. So sorry Mr Cale not well. Richard is far from well", four pages, some creasing and yellowing, 4to, "West Dene", Charteris Road, Woodford Green, n.d. [c.1930-1931] **Richard" (1927-2017), Sylvia Pankhurst's son. His father was the Italian anarchist Silvio Coria. Mr Cole (Clara's husband) is the artist and illustrator Herbert Cole (1860-1930). ***Mrs Payne-Jessie Payne, fellow suffragette with whom Syvia lived for a year and where she recovered from hunger strikes. Her husband, Jim, died around 1930/31.

Suffragettes.- Pankhurst (Sylvia, editor) The Woman's Dreadnought, 47 issues only, East London Federation of the Suffragettes, 1914-15.

        Est: £4,000 - £6,000

Suffragettes.- Pankhurst (Sylvia, editor) The Woman's Dreadnought, 47 issues only, comprising: Special Advance Number, 8pp., March 8 1914, no.1-21 and 23-47, all issues 4pp., except issue 41 with 8pp., illustration to p.1 of each issue, many issues frayed, torn (especially at fold) or chipped at edges, issue 2 torn in half, issue 14 browned along and around fold, but text for the most part unaffected and legible, preserved in later portfolio, folio (445 x 287mm.), East London Federation of the Suffragettes, March 8th 1914 - February 6th 1915. ⁂ Extremely rare and near-complete run of this highly important suffragette newspaper, missing only one issue (number 22, August 15th 1914) from the first 47, and here together with the Special Advance Number. The periodical appeared fortnightly under the editorship of Sylvia Pankhurst during the build-up to and first few months of the First World War. Much of the suffragette movement rallied behind the government at the beginning of the war, but Sylvia took a different path, diverging from her patriotic mother and sister to set up a working-class suffragette movement in the East End of London, producing this publication, which soon changed its name to The Workers' Dreadnought with more overtly socialist leanings and later being adopted as the official organ of the British Communist Party. Despite a claimed circulation of 20,000, these early issues seem exceptionally rare and we can trace no issues appearing for sale at auction.
