BIOGRAPHY: Frederick Pansing was born in Bremen, Germany in 1844. At the age of 16, he became a sailor and spent 5 years at sea before settling in Hoboken, New Jersey. There, in in 1865, he established his career as a marine painter and ship portraitist. Additionally, he worked in Manhattan and Brooklyn painting names on steamboats and illustrating sheet music. He was an excellent draftsman, and came to work for American Lithography in Jersey City in the late 1890's. A number of his marine paintings, with their detailed lines and architectural accuracy, were used as images for publication as chromolithographs. In the late 19th C., New York Harbor was at that time the busiest port in the world, filled with passenger liners, clipper ships, steam ships, commuter yachts, ferryboats, and tugboats. Public demand for marine paintings such as portraits of newly launched vessels and scenes of yacht races grew tremendously. Pansing received numerous private commissions for ships portraits and the Cunard and White Star Lines commissioned him to paint their growing fleets. His work was often printed as illustrations in Harper's, The Rudder, as well as other publications, and was printed on posters and maritime related promotional materials. From 1910 to 1911, Fred Pansing served as the manager of the Arts Club of New Jersey, and he died in 1912.

          Frederick (Fred) Pansing (1844 - 1912) Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower left, measures 7.5 x 18 inches and 14.5 x 26.5 inches w/frame.Frederick Pansing was born in Bremen, Germany in 1844. His family emigrated to the United States in 1865, when Pansing was a young man, residing in New Jersey and then in New York and finally residing in Hoboken. Little is currently known about Pansing’s early education and artistic training. He joined the merchant sea force as a sailor in 1870, leaving service two years later after relocating to Hoboken, New Jersey in 1872, when he decided to become a painter, lithographer, and photographer in his later career. Pansing is widely known and appreciated for a number of accurately detailed portraits of steamships operating in the Atlantic trade routes..In 1912, Pansing completed eighteen large ship portraits from the Nantucket Steamship Company which helped to further elevate his career as one of the masters of ship portrait painting.

Superbly detailed including "Twilight" on a name board at the front of the pilot house and on the paddle box, an eagle atop a flag pole, a Union Jack at the bow, an American flag at the stern, several passengers on the two decks, a walking beam, stacks and truss work, etc. A sandy shoreline and a two-masted schooner visible off Twilight's bow. Nicely rendered bright sky and reflection of the ship in the water. Signed lower left "Fred Pansing".

Condition B: extensive overpainting and restoration throughout margins; slight crackling in paint; minor replaced losses and restoration in image. One year after launching in 1890, "the Empress of Japan began to navigate under the new red-and-white-chequered Canadian Pacific flag [visible here]" (Canadian Pacific p. 66). German-born Pansing went to sea as a young man and upon his return began painting marine scenes. He composed ship portraits for the Cunard and White Star lines, as well as other shipping companies, and these in turn were issued by the companies as lithographs to be displayed in ticket offices.

          FREDERICK PANSING New Jersey/Germany, 1844-1912 Steamship S.S. Parisian of the Allan Line, circa 1885. Signed lower left (scratched in the paint) "Fred. Pansing". Provenance: Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, August 1994. Acquired from the above at that sale by the Kelton Foundation. Parisian was built for the Allan Line by R. Napier & Sons, Glasgow. She was launched November 1880 and made her maiden voyage, Liverpool-Halifax-Boston, on March 10, 1881. She remained in service through the end of 1898, serving Montréal, with a call at Québec during the summer months, and Halifax or Saint John in winter. In 1899, Parisian underwent a major refit at Workman, Clark & Co. of Belfast, and she returned to service in July 1899, running on the Liverpool-Canada service until March 1905. She then served at various times on the following routes: Glasgow-New York, Glasgow-Boston and London-Canada. She made her final passenger sailing, from Glasgow to Boston, in October and November 1913. Parisian was sold for scrapping in Italy in January 1914.           Attributed to Frederick Pansing (1822 - 1912). Oil on canvas, circa 1890. Fred Pansing, was born in Germany in 1844. After five years as a sailor, where he spent his spare time drawing sailing vessels, he came to New York City in 1865, hoping to make a life as an artist. After some time, Pansing found employment painting ships and making detailed, colorful prints of ships for the American Lithographic Company. The White Squadron was a transitional unit in the United States Navy during the late 19th century. The squadron was composed of the protected cruisers USS Atlanta, USS Boston, USS Chicago, and dispatch boats USS Dolphin and USS Yorktown. They were the first group of modern American vessels to be completed after the naval decay of the Civil War. Soon after it assembled, the White Squadron made its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe as an emissary from the new naval power. Relined. Inpainting in sky.
