Papaluca, M.V. SPARVIERO, painting depicting sailing ship (42x66 cm) in frame (defects) IT Luca Papaluca (1892-1934) "M.V. SPARVIERO" acquerello su carta applicato su tela (mm 420x660) Firmato in basso a destra "L.Papaluca" In cornice (difetti) La Sparviero fu una portaerei della Regia Marina progettata durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. La nave fu realizzata per la Società Navigazione Generale Italiana di Genova dal cantiere navale G. Ansaldo & Co di Sestri Ponente dove fu varata nel dicembre 1926 e battezzata Augustus ed ebbe come madrina del varo Edda Mussolini. La trasformazione del transatlantico in portaerei venne ordinata nel 1941 con il conseguente cambio di nomi in "Falco" e poi "Sparviero" ma a causa delle sempre maggiori difficoltà belliche non fu possibile terminare i lavori. In seguito alle vicende armistiziali la nave venne catturata dai tedeschi, che il 5 ottobre 1944 in ritirata rimorchiarono lo scafo all'imboccatura del porto di Genova, affondandolo. Nel 1947, finita la guerra, il relitto venne recuperato e venduto per la demolizione, che avvenne nel 1951.

LUCA PAPALUCA (ITALIAN, 1890-1934) S.Y. 'Cutty Sark' R.Y.S. Gouache Signed 'L. Papaluca' (lower right) and titled (lower left) 15 x 27in. (38 x 69cm.) Built for Major Keswick in 1920 by Yarrow from plans intended for a destroyer, Cutty Sark registered 883 gross tons, was powered by two of her builder's own turbines and could develop 5000bhp giving a healthy 24 knots - enough to attract the attentions of the Duke of Westminster to whom she was sold in 1927. She became well-known in yachting circles and even sported a mention in Noël Cowards Private Lives when alluded to steaming along the Riviera in view of the cast. In World War II she served as a submarine tender and was fitted with a gun platform in front of her bridge. After the War she passed into commercial service and, as the Joseph Hertz smuggled immigrants into Palestine in 1947-8, being scrapped shortly thereafter.

LUCA PAPALUCA (ITALIAN, 1890-1934) M.Y. WARRIOR N.Y.Y.C. Watercolor and gouache: 16 x 28 in. Framed; lower right signed: L. Papaluca; lower center titled: M.Y. Warrior N.Y.Y.C.; The Warrior, was one of the yachts owned by Frederick Vanderbilt from 1904 until it sank in 1914. It was a 282-foot, twin screw steel yacht with a breadth at the beam of 32.5 feet. "In the years leading up to 1913, they had spent their summers aboard their yacht Warrior off the coast of Europe. Frederick was fifty-seven at the time, and Louise was sixty-nine. With the outbreak of World War I in 1914 and the wreck of the Warrior in January of that year, Frederick and Louise abandoned their summer-long cruises in Europe for the coast of Bar Harbor, Maine.." from "Vanderbilt Mansion a Gilded-Age Country Place - A historic Resource Study," National Park Service, Boston 2008, p. 57.

Luca Papaluca (Italian, 1890-1934) View of the Steam Yacht "Sunbeam" flying the colours of the Royal Victorian Yacht Club signed lower right "L Papaluca" and inscribed lower centre with title watercolour and gouache h:41 w:59 cm Other Notes: "Sunbeam " was built for Thomas Brassey (later Governor of Victoria, Australia) by Bowdler & Chaffer of Seacombe, from a design by Clare Byrne. She was a three-masted topsail-yard schooner, designed for long distance and deep sea journeys, unlike many of the luxury yachts of the time. In 1885 William Gladstone (who had recently resigned as Prime Minister) was a guest of the Brasseys on Sunbeam for a three week cruise to Scandinavia. Lord Alfred Tennyson was also a guest in 1889 for a cruise in home waters. At the start of the First World War, "Sunbeam" was used for Red Cross work between Britain and France, before being converted to a hospital ship in 1915. Brassey sailed her to Mudros Bay to support the troops fighting in the Dardanelles, but she was of limited value there and Brassey handed her over to the Indian Government for the rest of the war. At the time of the handover, it is estimated that "Sunbeam" had travelled 500,000 miles since her launch.
