          Eric Pape (1870-1938) was born in San Francisco, where he studied at the San Francisco School of Design. He moved to France to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and exhibited his work widely beginning in 1890. He opened his own art school in 1898 in Boston; it remained in operation until 1913. He was best known as a painter of archeological and historical scenes, and traveled throughout the world to find inspiration for his works.
