New York: Henry I. Megeary, 1849. 25 1/2" x 38 1/4" sheet. Comparable: Christie's, 2020 - $16,250. Color aquatint of one of the most attractive 19th-century views of New York City. "Here is an extraordinary view of Manhattan as a rapidly developing metropolis. John William Hill has placed us at just the right height for peering into the city's streets, sizing up the look of its buildings, and noting the increasing density of its structures as the midpoint of the nineteenth century is reached" (Deak). P.T. Barnum's Museum of Sensational Curiosities and Mathew Brady's Daguerrian Miniature Gallery are clearly visible in the foreground. Megarey American This rarely available work is in the collections of many major museums including the metropolitan museum of new york This panorama captures a bustling lower Manhattan in 1849. Taken from the tower of St. Paul's Chapel on Broadway, just below City Hall Park, the view includes P. T. Barnum's famous museum at lower left, which stood at the junction of Broadway, Park Row and Ann Street from 1841 to 1865. Horse-drawn omnibuses and pedestrians crowd the street below and a rooftop sign at right identifies Mathew Brady's Daguerrean Miniature Gallery, where New Yorkers had their photographs taken. Above the projecting roof, Fulton Street recedes towards the East River and, at right, Broadway moves south past the towered Main Post Office facing Nassau Street; Trinity Church at Wall Street; its spire, completed in 1846, would remain the city's tallest structure until 1890.

          Aquatint engraving by Henry Papprill after a sketch by F. Catherwood Esq. Papprill was a 19th century British engraver whose subjects mainly included major cities. Titled "New York - Taken from the north west angle of Fort Columbus Governor's Island" Mounted in patinaed silver frame. Measures 32.5 inches by 23 inches sight and 34.5 inches and 23.5 inches framed. Print has water stain at bottom right but is in good condition otherwise.
