Felix Pardo de Tavera (1859 - 1932) - Roman Woman

      Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION Roman Woman signed with a dedication “Al Sr. Llanso Recuerdo” (lower right) ca. 1892 oil on pyro-engraved wood 19 3/4” x 13 1/2” (50 cm x 34 cm) PROVENANCE Private collection, Spain WRITE UPFelix Pardo de Tavera would be the last scholar of the Manila Academia, beginning his scholarship in 1892, possibly helped along by the fact that he already lived in Europe. The scholar Luciano P.R. Santiago would write about his artistic career thus : “Like his elder brother, Trinidad Herminigildo, he graduated with the degree of doctor of medicine at the University of Paris in 1882. He then combined his medical practice with sculpture, his first love. It must be remembered that the building which was rented by the Manila Academy was owned by his family and he had taken art classes there before transfering to Paris in 1877. He had also won a silver medal at thePhilippine Exposition in 1887 as noted already, and bronze medals at the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1889 and the Fine Arts Exposition of Barcelona in 1891.With these credentials, he won the first pension in sculpture created by the royal order of 1890. As will be seen later he also turnedout to be the last Philippine art scholar of this period. He started his scholarship in Paris in April of 1892. Barely five months later, he was involved in the family controversy. As a result, he emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1895 to finish the last year of his scholarship and settle there permanently. This work depicting a Roman woman, one hand holding the folds of her toga, reflects the interests of the time for all things Pompeii, the ancient site had been discovered in that century. It is a rare work in wood since Pardo de Tavera would usually work in the more conventional bronze.

    • Felix Pardo de Tavera (1859 - 1932) C’est mi!... (Bercks/Mer)
      Apr. 22, 2023

      Felix Pardo de Tavera (1859 - 1932) C’est mi!... (Bercks/Mer)

      Est: ₱80,000 - ₱104,000

Felix Pardo de Tavera (1859 - 1932) C’est mi!... (Bercks/Mer) signed and dated 1890; stamped 456 bronze H: 11” (28 cm) D: 3 1/2” (9 cm) Sculptor and physician Félix Pardo de Tavera was the son of the elder Félix Pardo de Tavera, a member of the Consejo de Administración, and Juliana Gorricho, female scion of a prominent real estate family that owned Escolta. He is the brother of Paz Pardo de Tavera, Juan Luna’s ill-fated wife, and erudite scholar Trinidad Pardo de Tavera. Félix and his siblings were orphaned by their father at very young ages; Félix Sr. was among the casualties of the 1863 Manila earthquake. The children were then taken under the wing of their uncle, Joaquin Pardo de Tavera, a liberal lawyer and member of the Comite de Reformadores, which campaigned for reforms in the Spanish colonial government. Félix studied at the Ateneo from 1874-76 while attending classes at the Academia de Dibujo y Pintura. In 1877, he sailed to France to pursue further studies, enrolling at Sorbonne University and graduating with a degree in medicine in 1882. His dissertation studied the causes of fetal death during early pregnancy. Félix then specialized in pediatric surgery, working at Paris’ Hôpital Lariboisière. The historical context and significance of his sculptural masterpiece titled C’est mi! (lit. “It’s me!”) is likely connected to his experience of being paternally orphaned at a young age and his studies and work in pediatrics. The image of a smiling stout boy may contrastingly allude to Felix’s lost gaiety as a child. Furthermore, the work likely reflects the endearing children whose lives he had come across in his pediatric career. C’est mi! is a celebration of childhood innocence and naivety (which, in the case of Félix, was lost too soon) and Félix’s lived experiences. (A.M.)

      Est: ₱120,000 - ₱156,000

Modeled in the form of a young boy standing with hands in his pockets, Felix Pardo de Tavera’s sculpture titled C'est mi! is seemingly a study of the self. By using a compounded play on words, Pardo de Tavera’s intention is one of self-discovery as he uses his past self as a reference point for his present piece and his future plans. By doing so, Pardo de Tavera’s straightforward piece becomes a medium of self-contemplation and identity. By sculpting his past self at his present condition, de Tavera deterritorializes identity by removing the social context of the past through the use of a uniformed palette, medium, and style throughout this sculpture.
