Engraved map outlined in color, 2 engraved title pages, 118 ENGRAVED PLATES AFTER W. H. BARTLETT, notice slips at beginning of parts 5, 15, and 30. (Some browning and spotting throughout, a few leaves and plates dampstained.) Original buff-colored printed wrappers, advertisements on outside of back wrappers, modern slipcases (some soiling and light chipping, part 6 with small tear with at head of upper cover touching text, some wrappers separating from spine, lacking rear wrapper to part 21, 8 back wrappers in a different state than Abbey). FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS. "Like Columbus, at first, we only dream of America. It is yet both a new and an unknown world to us, in regard to its scenes of natural beauty and sublimity. The Proprietors...have sought to produce a series of Select Views, which will form a characteristic Panorama of the Western World; especially in its Lake and River Scenery, which has no parallel in Europe, perhaps not on earth" (prospectus, back wrapper, part 1). Hand-colored engraved portrait, engraved titles, map and 117 HAND-COLORED ENGRAVED PLATES AFTER WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT. Contemporary green morocco gilt (neatly rebacked in green morocco). Provenance: Alan L. Weiner (his sale, Christie's New York, 22 May 1996, lot 32). FIRST EDITION, with the date and colored steel engravings. "This work has been frequently reprinted, without date. The intelligent buyer will get the first edition" (Sabin). William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) was an English artist famous for his views of popular travel destinations. For the American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature, Bartlett traveled several times to the United States. He followed the popular tourist route from New York City, up to the Hudson and then west to Niagara Falls. He also visited New England and the mid-Atlantic region. His charming views, especially these finely colored prints, of natural wonders and architectural monuments, capture the United Stated in the 1830s. Colored copies, with the dated title-page are rare.
