Maxfield Parrish Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Illustrator, Painter, Landscape painter, Decoration painter, b. 1870 - d. 1966

American artist Maxfield Parrish was a twentieth century painter and illustrator. Born in Philadelphia in 1870, Parrish's early art education came from his father Stephen, also an artist, and was formalized at the Pennsylvania College of Arts. While the advent of mass-production, color printing meant steady work for many artists, Maxfield Parrish became a virtual household name in the 1920s. His illustrations and oil paintings flooded their way onto children's books, magazines, calendars, and greeting cards.

Maxfield Parrish paintings were known for their rich colors and ethereal quality, characteristics that carried over to the landscapes he focused on later in his career. Thanks to the volume of work he produced, Maxfield Parrish prints values can make them an affordable alternative to the rare original paintings. Collectors of vintage landscape and seascape prints can find a variety of artists online at Invaluable.

Maxfield Parrish (American, 1870-1966), Garden of Allah, Print

    Est: $200 - $300

Property from a Hilton Head Island Private Collection Description: Maxfield Parrish (American, 1870-1966), Garden of Allah, Print, an offset lithograph, initial signed lower right, with Swanson Galleries San Francisco label verso, in a period giltwood frame. Frame size: 18 1/2 in. x 33 in. Maxfield Parrish was an American artist and illustrator known for his prints and paintings of whimsical mythological scenes. During his career, Parrish produced work for Harper’s Bazaar, Life, General Electric, and illustrated books by L. Frank Baum. The artist deftly captured light with a precise yet surreal intensity by using many layers of saturated glazes over a tonal underpainting, as evinced in his work Daybreak (1922). Born in Philadelphia, in 1870, he was the son of painter Stephen Parrish. His father exposed him to architectural and artistic masterpieces while traveling through Europe at a young age. Parrish went on to study under Robert Vonnoh and Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia as a young man. Over the following decades, the artist helped define the Golden Age of Illustration in America alongside N.C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell. Today, Parrish’s works are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among others. Est: $1,500 - $2,000

MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870-1966) THE CENTURY / MIDSUMMER HOLIDAY NUMBER. 1897. 19½x13 inches, 50x33 cm. The Thomas & Wylie Lithographic Co. Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears and restored loss in left margin. Matted and framed. Most famous for his children's book illustrations, Parrish was nonetheless a "remarkable draughtsman, who energetically and successfully mixed fantasy and reality to create a luminous dreamworld that, for all its strangeness, is precisely rendered" (Parrish intro). He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then at the Drexel Institute under Howard Pyle. His posters were more illustrative and detailed than those of Edward Penfield and Will Bradley, and marked by what Charles Hiatt referred to as "curious individuality." Parrish won second prize in The Century's 1896 poster contest with this entry. He might very well have won first (which went to J.C. Leyendecker), but "entries had been restricted to three colors, and Parrish, an avid experimenter with the new half-tone process, employed five" (Margolin p. 20).
