Halil Paşa (1859-1939) Attributed, Constantinople, Oil, c 1900

      Est: €10,000 - €13,000

Oil on canvas Istanbul / Turkey, circa 1900 Halil Paşa (1859-1939) - One of the most important Turkish painters of the turn of the century Signed ‘Halil’ lower right Dimensions: 70 x 65 cm Mounted in gilt wooden frame: 77 x 72 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Today's Istanbul was a favorite motif of the Turkish painter - here is a view of the Bosphorus seen from Pera in his typical Impressionist style of painting Halil Paşa was the first so-called ‘soldier painter’ who dedicated himself as an officer exclusively to painting. Painting was part of the officers' training to train the accurate observation. Through his Impressionist style of painting Paşa is considered an antagonist of Osman Hamdi, who painted in an academic and orientalist manner. The fact that Paşa painted ‘plein-air’ was an absolute novelty in Turkey. Condition: The painting is in good condition, according to age. The paint surface has somewhat darkened and shows minor framing marks and abrasion. There is a patch on the reverse. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame has minor traces of use. The dimensions are 70 x 65 cm, while the frame measures 77 x 72 cm. Halil Paşa (1859-1939) Halil Paşa studied first at the Military Academy in Constantinople; afterwards, he went to Paris, following a scholarship in painting under the guidance of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gustave Courtois. He then worked as a professor of painting at the Military Academy. Until his retirement, he has also served as Director General of Museums and Director of the State ABK Constantinople. 1908 was followed by a trip to Egypt. In 1939, the jury of the first State painting and sculpture exhibition refused his paintings. Paşa was influenced by the Barbizon School and Impressionism and thus an antagonist of academic painting. He created mainly landscapes, architecture, seascapes and portraits. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
