Manolo Pascual (1902-1983), Young Man (Death Mask), 20th C.

      Est: €2,560 - €3,200

Bronze, patinated Presumably USA, 2nd half of the 20th century Manolo Pascual (1902-1983) – Spanish sculptor and painter Signed in the cast ‘M. Pascual’ Overall dimensions: 15 x 19.5 x 30 cm Very good condition Bronze of a young man in the style of a death mask with peaceful facial features, closed eyes; partially coarse, animated surface design with effective light-shadow effects Death masks had always held great fascination for mankind. Already in ancient Egypt death masks were produced; usually they were made of gold and intended to protect the decedent. In other cultures, death masks were made in the course of ancestor worship as memory for the living as well as representative remnant of the dead. Whether death masks are now regarded as macabre, as art or as objects of reflection is lastly a question of fashion. Boosted by artists such as Auguste Rodin and Adolf von Menzel the interest in the death face was booming in the 19th century. The enthusiasm culminated with the death mask of ‘L’Inconnue de la Seine’, an unidentified young woman found in the Seine. Soon the mask of the beautiful young woman was a popular fixture on the walls of many parlors and studies. Condition: The bronze is in a very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The dimensions measure 15 x 19.5 x 30 cm. Manolo Pascual (1902-1983) The painter and sculptor studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Already at the age of 16, he was awarded the first prize for sculpture. His works were initially exhibited in Rome and Madrid, later in Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico and several times in New York, where he was permanently residing from 1951 onwards. Here he was professor in the art department of the New School for Social Research. Manolo Pascual predominately created sculptures in the style of Classicism and he shared his knowledge and skills with a wide range of Dominican sculptors. His oeuvre, consisting of sculptures in wood, marble, plaster and bronze, reflects an original style. Today his works can be seen for example at the Museo Bellapart in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. (nlu) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
