Due to the extraordinary historical and artistic importance of the lot, no buyer's premium will be applied. Aggiunte a Prospero Fontana e Bartolomeo Passerotti, in Arti a confronto. Studi in onore di Anna Maria Matteucci, a cura di D. Lenzi, Bologna 2004, pp. 145-149, tav. 105. The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Dr. Vera Fortunati, dated July 29, 2004 and available in copy, which advance the present attribution. The scholar refers the work to Passerotti's late activity, defining it as "a splendid document of the last period of an artist who ranks among the great protagonists of the European sixteenth century." The portrait, which has the dimensions of an altarpiece, can be placed into the typology of "family scenes in action", a portrait genre of Flemish origin that Passerotti spread in Bologna from the seventh decade of the sixteenth century. In particular, the painting has the function of celebrating the consecration to religious life of the young son of Girolamo Salamoni.

(Bologna 1529–1592) Portrait of a scholar, three-quarter-length, beside a table, inscribed upper centre: IVLIVS. CAESAR CLAVDINVS PHIL/ET MED. LECTOR PVB, oil on canvas, 109.5 x 88 cm, framed Provenance: sale, Christie’s, New York, 31 January 2023, lot 319 (as Bartolomeo Passerotti) The present painting is an example of Bartolomeo Passerotti’s portraiture datable to the 1570s and during this period his works are characterised by sitters shown in three-quarter-length, displaying their collections or other scholarly attributes. The sitter in the present painting is holding a book in his left hand and is depicted turned slightly to the left, to achieve a well-lit view of his face and to lend the composition a sense of movement. His features are pensive and the dark colouring of his doublet and the background make the white of the cuffs and ruff stand out to frame the warm flesh tones of his face and hands. A similar pose and the quiet, expressive mood of introspection can be observed in Passerotti’s celebrated Portrait of Sertorio Sertori, which is dated 1577 and today conserved in the Galleria Estense, Modena (inv. no. 8018, see A. Ghirardi, Bartolomeo Passerotti. Catalogo Generale, Rimini 1990, p. 215, no. 54). Bartolomeo Passerotti was one of the most important and best-known portraitists of the sixteenth century and was highly regarded by his contemporaries, such as Titian, as well as by leading artists from later generations, including Guido Reni. He was born in Bologna and travelled to Rome twice in his early life. By 1560 he had settled in Bologna where he established a workshop. The earliest documented Bolognese paintings by the artist show a pictorial language influenced by Correggio and Parmigianino, and an anatomical interest in powerful figures similar to that of Pellegrino Tibaldi. Passerotti’s painting reflects his active involvement in the cultural life of Bologna during the latter half of the sixteenth century.

Attributed to the workshop of Bartolomeo Passarotti - Five male heads

        Est: £1,200 - £1,800

Attributed to the workshop of Bartolomeo Passarotti,  Italian 1529-1592 Five male heads;  pen and dark brown ink, possibly iron gall ink, on laid paper, indistinctly inscribed '5...', (crossed out, centre left), and with an indistinct chalk sketch of the Madonna and Child enthroned verso, 19.9 x 25.2 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  While perhaps best known for his large oils of butchers' stalls populated with grinning grotesques and rustic figures, Bolognese painter Bartolomeo Passarotti was also a prolific draughtsman, and a keen and astute observer of the human form. The present sheet of head studies, rendered with confident hatchwork and firm, decisive contours, imbuing the profiles with an almost sculptural heft, shows the influence of drawings by an earlier generation of artists. It is particularly reminiscent of ink drawings by the Florentine sculptor and draughtsman Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560), in whose workshop Passarotti is known to have studied. The drawing presented here shows distinct similarities to other known head studies given to Passarotti or to his extensive Bolognese workshop, such as the sketch of two children's heads held in the collection of the Louvre, Paris (INV 8488), the studies of male heads held at the Galleria Estense (no. 1212), the drawing of a female head in profile which appeared at auction at auction in Berlin in 2021 (Bassenge, 03 December 2021, lot 6633, EUR 8,000) and the example which was sold in Brussels that same year (Vanderkindere, 19 January 2021, lot 220, EUR 1,900). The dramatically foreshortened face to the lower central portion of the present drawing exemplifies the artist's interest in forensically exploring the human form from every angle. This approach is clearly visible in Passarotti's many studies of anatomy and sculpture including the sheet showing a male torso at the National Gallery of Art, Washington (2000.124.1.b), or the study of hands now in the Jan Krugier Collection, Monaco (JK 4667).

(Bologna 1529–1592) Portrait of a young man as a saint, inscribed upper right: F./ A., oil on panel, 20.5 x 14.2 cm, framed Provenance: European private collection We are grateful to Angela Ghirardi for fully confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. Ghirardi dates the present painting to the 1580s, a period in which Passerotti was the pre-eminent painter in Bologna. This work displays Passerotti’s interest in depicting his subject in a naturalistic manner, here demonstrated by the representation of the anonymous sitter in the guise of a saint. The present work is defined by the manner in which the face is turned towards the viewer, lending the composition a more dynamic character, and illustrating, although subtly, Passerotti’s interest in portraying his figures in action and movement. The liveliness of the execution and the bright colours, rendered with thin brushstrokes on the face and clothing, are typical of the artist’s work. His first experiments with genre painting probably date from this period and his production of such works served as an important point of reference for the young Annibale Carracci. Passerotti was born in Bologna and travelled to Rome twice in his early period. By 1560 he had settled in Bologna where he established a workshop. The earliest documented Bolognese paintings by the artist show a pictorial language influenced by Correggio and Parmigianino, and an anatomical interest in powerful figures similar to that of Pellegrino Tibaldi. Passerotti’s painting reflects his active involvement in Bologna’s cultural life during the latter half of the 16th century. Naturalist Ulisse Aldovrandi’s scientific curiosity is reflected in portraits such as The Botanist (Rome, Galleria Spada), and The Family Group (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum).

        Bartolomeo Passerotti: Sea Monster

        Est: €4,000 - €8,000

PASSEROTTI, BARTOLOMEO Bologna 1529 - 1592 attributed Title: Sea Monster. Technique: Pen and India ink on beige paper. Mounting: Glued at the edges. Measurement: 23 x 17,5cm. Notation: Inscribed lower centre: "Raffael Sanzio da Urbino". Frame: Mat. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Bartolomeo Passerotti was one of the most important Bolognese artists of the 16th century. At the age of twenty-two he stayed in Rome, where - as his biographers report - he devoted himself to the extensive study of drawing and the technique of etching. By 1560, the artist had settled in Bologna, where he opened a studio and is still praised in contemporary sources for his drawing and colouristic skills. In the 1570s, he probably became friends with Ulisse Aldrovandi, a famous naturalist, botanist and entomologist from Bologna, who founded one of the first natural history museums that became famous throughout Europe. The close relationship between the painter and the naturalist is evident in the paintings and drawings of these years, for example in Passerotti's "Bestiary", which depicts sharks, eagles, crocodiles, cocks and dogs, and in the market scenes with the butcher's shops and fishmongers. Curiosity about nature, especially the sea, is influenced by the scientific illustration promoted by Aldrovandi and his encyclopaedic collection. Perhaps the present drawing was made in the 1570s, depicting a sea monster in Passerotti's typical technique - pen and ink on paper. The work is almost identical to another depiction attributed to the artist in the Gallery of Prints of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence (217 x 136 mm, Inv. 538 O). We are grateful to Marzia Faietti, Bologna, for suggesting the attribution of the present drawing on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph. Explanations to the Catalogue

(Bologna 1529–1592) Portrait of a gentleman, holding a letter, long half-length,  oil on canvas, 105 x 79 cm, framed  Provenance: Aristocratic European collection; where acquired by the present owner We are grateful to Massimo Pulini for confirming the attribution after examining the present painting in the original and for his help in cataloguing the present lot. We are also grateful to Angela Ghirardi for independently confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. . The painting shows a man standing, holding a letter in his left hand; he is shown almost as if he has just risen to receive a guest, his right hand still grasps the arm of his chair. His clothing is trimmed in black at the sleeves, shoulders, and along the long line of buttons down the front of dark fabric which reflects light as if made of silk or refined satin. It falls loosely in striated folds that part slightly at the front. Against the dark colouring of these robes and the background, the white of the cuffs and ruff stand out to frame the warm flesh tones of the sitter’s hands and face. The sitter’s features are thoughtful and intense, yet also neutral. His forehead is un-furrowed and the wrinkles marking his face are merely the traces of time upon his skin. His head is somewhat turned to the left, to favour a well-lit three-quarter-view of the face. This portrait appears sincere and without emphasis or apparent celebrative intent. Instead, the portrait focuses on a realistic rendering of the sitter’s appearance, his greying and bearded head, and demonstrates the considerable skill of the artist. This work complies with an established pictorial method and compositional formula broadly diffused in Bolognese portraiture in the second half of the sixteenth century, typical of the work of Bartolomeo Passerotti to whom this painting can be assigned. Comparing the expressive qualities of the painting to many other well-known portraits by Passerotti, the realistic description of the sitter’s features suggests the work should be dated to the final phase of his career, a time when the city of Bologna was beginning to feel the influence of the innovations introduced by the young Annibale Carracci. As for the identity of the sitter, an inscription on the folded letter held in his hand supplies some assistance, this reads: ‘Marchese Niccolò Bianchini 1500’. A second inscription, on the back of the canvas, documents the painting’s hereditary descent within the same family: ‘Del Sen.re Co Ant.o Bianchini 1704’. However, it is important to note, that the inscription on the letter, which is rendered in elegant calligraphy, does not appear contemporary to the painting, but is later, and was possibly added by a descendant who recorded his ownership on the back of the work. The year 1500, may refer to the date of birth of the Marchese Niccolò who appears to be aged about sixty in the painting. The identity of the sitter remains a matter of conjecture however: If the year 1500 did correspond with that of birth of the Marchese Niccolò Bianchini, the portrait would date to around 1560, however the portrait conforms to Passerotti’s style of the 1580s, when he had begun to soften the expressions of his subjects, shedding the formal character of his earlier portraiture. By comparison, his Portrait of a Man conserved in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Marseille, dated 1566 still presents the highly mannerist quality associated with his early work. Although the noble Bolognese family of Bianchini appears in the Repertorio per lo studio de collezionismo Bolognese del Seicento (compiled by Raffaella Morselli in 1997) in several places, with no less than four inventories recording the presence of family portraits, (including the inventories of Nobile Pompeo of 1627, Marquis Pirro of 1644, Nobile Prospero of 1646 and Count Angelo Bianchini of 1657), unfortunately neither the sitter, nor the artist of the present work, are specified. So far, it has not been possible to trace the dates of birth of Niccolò or his descendent Carlo Antonio Bianchini and the identity of the sitter in the present portrait remains unclear. Bartolomeo Passerotti was one of the most important and best-known portraitists of the sixteenth century and it is known that he was highly regarded by his contemporaries, such as Titian, as well as by leading artists of later generations, including Guido Reni. Paintings by Passerotti which bear comparison to the present work, in which the pose and quiet, expressive mood of introspection can also be observed in the celebrated Portrait of Sertorio Sertori conserved in the Galleria Estense, Modena.

Ghirardi, pp. 296-297, nn. 111-112).
