Passe II, Crispijn de (±1597-±1670) (attrib.). (Month of June showing a couple from Spain).

      Est: €250 - €350

Passe II, Crispijn de (±1597-±1670) (attrib.). (Month of June showing a couple from Spain). Engraving from the series of 12 Months, 13,5x8.6 cm. - Laid down and foxed. = Rare. Franken 359; not in Hollstein. The series show couples from all over the world in local dresses, combined with astrological signs. These engravings are attributed to Crispijn de Passe II, probably because the plates of the series appear in the inventories of the De Passe firm from 1639 (Veldman, p. 453, nr. 199: 'Twaelf maenden in drachten in 12 plaetgen') and 1653 (Veldman, p. 456, nr. 32). Franken was the first to ascribe the engravings (on the basis of only six plates: described as those 'très belles gravures') to Crispijn II. Backer, Jacob de (1540/45-1590/91). (Allegory of Taste). Etching, 15x19,6 cm., "Iacob de Backer invenit" in the plate. - Sl. fingersoiled; trimmed a few mm outside the borderline. = Hollstein 4, 2nd state of 2. From the series of the Five Senses. According to annotation on the mount from the collection of Fred. J. Bianchi (but withoout his usual stamp).

Crispin De Passe 17th Century Engraving

      Est: $200 - $300

Crispin van de Passe (1593-1670) 17th century engraving. Jousting horse and rider. Image measures 12.5 in. x 16.5 in. and the sheet measures 15.75 in. x 20.25 in. Unframed, loose and not mounted or glued down. Provenance: Estate of David Milot. David was a Real Estate Broker by trade and a passionate, lifelong collector of anything of quality that caught his eye. His collection of fine art, bronzes, designer decor, period furniture, mid-century furniture, designer furniture, Chinese antiques and more are among some of the finest examples available. David's knowledge, or perhaps more accurately, "his eye" for quality, was usually the most refined of anyone in the room. David purchased thousands of items over the years at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores so any additional provenance is not readily available. These treasures were truly found "in the wild," and that's how David liked it. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. CRISPIJN VAN DE PASSE (after Dirck van Baburen) The Backgammon Players

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

CRISPIJN VAN DE PASSE (after Dirck van Baburen) The Backgammon Players. Engraving, circa 1625. 213x147 mm; 8 3/8x5 1/2 inches. Ex-collection Robert Walter Weir (Lugt 2559, verso). Trimmed on the plate mark. A very good, dark and well-inked impression of this scarce engraving. Van de Passe (1589-1637) based this engraving on a painting by Van Baburen, circa 1622, now in a private collection, who in turn was inspired by Caravaggio. The Latin inscription upper center "Irarum causus fugito (Flee from the causes of anger)" is a warning to all who become too involved in the game; the Dutch inscription below is more scathing, and translates: "A dicer and gamer is a wretch, he drinks and squanders his money and beats his wife."
