JEAN-BAPTISTE PATER - Huiles sur toile (une paire)

              Est: CHF250,000 - CHF300,000

JEAN-BAPTISTE PATER , VALENCIENNES, 1695 - PARIS, 1736 Le Concert champêtre et La Cueillette des roses Oil on canvas (a pair) 52 x 65.4 cm These two paintings with identical dimensions and responding compositions were conceived as a pair. At first glance, they appear to be perfectly symmetrical. In the shade of a clump of trees, the same number of characters, seven, are centred around a main couple sitting in the centre of the composition. Conversely, in each canvas, the setting in which our characters move shows a rural landscape with a village on the horizon and, closer to us, off-centre, this slightly overhanging clump of trees that offers a seat to these elegant walkers. On the other hand, the very first plane, a dirt road, is left vacant with the few accessories that will give the painting its title: a sheet of music here, a basket of flowers there. The viewer, placed at a distance, is immediately informed about the subject of each scene represented. However, notwithstanding the titles, the aim here is to depict gallant scenes between couples of aristocrats who have gone to enjoy the countryside. And our two counterparts seem to be in dialogue. In addition to the two couples in each scene, there are secondary characters, mostly children, who move around the protagonists with varying degrees of complicity or indifference. Thus, this little girl sometimes in the arms of her elder, sometimes venturing to pick flowers on the other side of the road. The gallant couples answer each other from one painting to the next with subtlety. Their outfits, which are ill-suited to the circumstances and the place, reinforce this impression of carelessness and even incongruity. The woman sumptuously dressed in a French silk taffeta gown in the Country Concert has a slightly more rural counterpart in the Rose Picking with an apron around her waist. Objects of all desires, they attract the eye in their iridescent pink and white sparkling finery. Their companions, eagerly at their side, offer them an advantageous counterpoint in their red actors' costumes. One plays the guitar while the other is content to tell a story... We are in the preliminary stages. The other two couples, in the background, are already embracing. One with his back to us, the other facing us, they are revealing the next stage in their lovemaking. The painter plays with their mirror-like attitudes as if they were the same couple. The emerald green taffeta skirts of the young women are identical, as are the brown jackets of their lover, further reinforcing the illusion of the same scene being played out from one painting to the next. This atmosphere of bucolic marivaudage unfolds under the auspices of little lovers who overhang the characters. Depicted in the form of sculptures that would populate a park, these putti reveal, if it were still necessary, the true subject of these paintings. Their presence in the countryside, far from being anecdotal, takes on allegorical overtones, as seen in the work of his contemporary Lancret. Jean-Baptiste Pater (1695-1736) was a French rococo painter. Trained under Antoine Watteau, he remained under his influence throughout his career, both in style and in his choice of subjects. In 1725, he was admitted to the Académie as a painter of fêtes galantes, a genre specially designed for his master, after whose death he completed some commissions. It was during this period that his counterparts, Le Concert champêtre and La Cueillette des roses, were painted. Watteau's influence is evident in the composition, where these couples seem to have just escaped from his Pèlerinage à l'ile de Cythère, preserved in the Louvre: the same scansion of movement, like so many moments cut from the same story. Pater nevertheless developed his own, more sustained colour palette. In addition to pearl pinks and silvery greys, there are almost acidic blue and green tones. The colours of the landscape are also more pastel, less iridescent than those of his predecessor. Finally, the scene makes clear reference to the Italian theatre, which was very popular with painters at the time. The Grand siècle and its serious painting gave way to more libertine themes with the Regency. Society, freed from the shackles of the court, indulged in games that painters echoed to the point of creating the new genre of 'fêtes galantes', adapting the genre scene to the licentious mores of the aristocracy. This art of gallantry, which spread throughout Europe during the Enlightenment, found a brilliant emissary in Pater, one of whose main clients was Emperor Frederick II of Prussia. In his work, he repeatedly depicts couples in the act of seduction, thus offering a mirror to the society that commissions them. The woman being courted is always at the centre of his work, around which the suitors gravitate. Pater, always libertine but never lecherous, offers us a hymn to the timeless game of seduction. JEAN-BAPTISTE PATER , VALENCIENNES, 1695 - PARIS, 1736 Galantine scene in a park Oil on panel 47 x 42 cm This assembly of aristocrats conversing in the open air could just as well be in a drawing room, as their delicate, even affected poses seem to have little connection with the surrounding nature. Seated on makeshift furniture, they indulge in conversation and music. The man on the left, with his hand proudly resting on his cane, seems to set the tone as all the ladies turn in his direction. He turns his chest towards his neighbour, who responds in a mirror-like pose. She seems to refuse his advances. All around her, people are watching and listening, while playing the flute or the hurdy-gurdy. A child lost in this world of adults stands beside the coveted lady. This woman is the focus of the scene. The light seems to emanate from her sumptuous white and pink silk dress with its shimmering reflections. Around her, the colours of the other clothes are more subdued, to highlight her. At her feet, her companion echoes her in a colourful dress. We are on the edge of a wood. On the left, a breakthrough allows the eye to discover a rural landscape. Under the foliage on the right, a sculpted group of languid putti offer a reply to the couples below, suggesting the lovemaking to come. This scene transports us to the aristocratic and libertine society of the Regency, where bucolic settings serve as a backdrop for gallant conversations. The palette of soft colours with subtle nuances plays with the light reflections. The painter excels here in rendering the shimmering of fabrics. JEAN-BAPTISTE PATER , VALENCIENNES, 1695 - PARIS, 1736 A Lady in her Bedroom Oil on canvas 29 x 35.4 cm This young woman seated at the edge of her unmade bed seems quite pensive... The assistance of her maid holding a basin for her toilet does not rouse her from her musings. Half-dressed, her low-cut shirt revealing her shoulder when her skirt is raised to reveal her bare legs, the lady is slow to put her toilet in order, thinking, with a smile, of some past love affair. The slight disorder of the room seems to testify, indeed, to the passage of a lover: the linen thrown on the bench on the right, the shoes scattered near the bed and finally these few flowers on the floor? escaped from a bouquet on the left... The erotic symbolism of these freshly 'picked' roses is a constant in Regency galant painting. Everything here speaks to us of love, starting with this alcove with its heavy crimson curtains, from which emerges this resting bench serving as an improvised bed where a prominent bolster invites you to lie down. But there is another couple, this time of domestic animals, which echoes the past scene. A doggy, with a curved profile, looks unkindly at a cat which is overlooking her from the top of the parapet. The latter, with its rounded back and raised tail, seems more aggressive, ready for a confrontation. A mise en abyme of romantic relationships, the animal duo evokes, not without malice, the gallant jousts so prized in the painting of the Enlightenment. It was during this period that his counterparts, Le Concert champêtre and La Cueillette des roses, were painted. Watteau's influence is evident in the composition, where these couples seem to have just escaped from his Pèlerinage à l'ile de Cythère (Pilgrimage to the Island of Cytherea), preserved in the Louvre: the same scansion of movement, like so many moments cut out of the same story. However, Pater is developing its own, more intense colour palette. In addition to pearl pinks and silver greys, there are blue and green tones that are almost acidic. The colours of the landscape are also more pastel, less iridescent than those of his predecessor. Finally, the scene makes clear reference to the Italian theatre, which was very fashionable among painters at the time. The Grand siècle and its serious painting gave way to more libertine themes with the Regency. Society, freed from the shackles of the court, indulged in games that painters echoed to the point of creating the new genre of 'fêtes galantes', adapting the genre scene to the licentious mores of the aristocracy. This art of gallantry, which spread throughout Europe during the Enlightenment, found a brilliant emissary in Pater, one of whose main clients was the Emperor Frederick II of Prussia. In his work, he repeatedly portrays couples engaged in seduction, thus offering a mirror to the society that commissioned them. The woman being courted is always at the centre of the work, around which the suitors gravitate. Pater, always libertine but never lecherous, offers us a hymn to the timeless game of seduction. 29 x 35,4 cm. In filigranem Louis XV-Rahmen. (†) Provenienz: Dickinson, Dealers in Fine Art, London und New York.
