Katie Paterson, British b.1981- Lightbulb to Simulate Moonlight, 2009; mixed media; boxed set of 2 light bulbs with halogen filament, frosted colour shell, box, edition number ten of 10, 17x6x26cm (ARR) Provenance: Haunch of Venison, London; Contemporary Art Society, London, where purchased by the present owner in 2010. Note: Katie Paterson is a contemporary Scottish artist. Paterson’s conceptual approach is evident in the present piece, which is part of an installation of 289 bulbs which each emit a lifetime’s supply of moonlight based on the individual’s average lifespan. This piece also demonstrates the interests which dominate the artist’s wider output, which include a preoccupation with space and geological time, the earth’s relationship with the cosmos of which it is a part, and the individual’s place within this. Her works have been exhibited in a number of prestigious collections across the world, including at the Tate Britain, the Hayward Gallery, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, Kunsthalle Wien, and MCA Sydney.
