Mid 20th Century; Original, 17.5” height by 14.5” width Original oil still life by Rebecca Patman Chandler, a North Carolina artist famous for her oil and watercolor still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. This still life depicts two dead birds on a blue-green background as they hang upside down from their legs. Although it may seem unusual, still lifes featuring this type of subject have a long tradition throughout art history. Painting deceased game allows for greater attention to detail as artists do not have to worry about their subjects moving. This precision is shown here as one can see the individual strokes of color added to each feather, specifically in the chests, heads, and wings. Signed “Patman” bottom right. The frame is slightly damaged. Wood frame is 23.75” height by 20.75” width. Not inspected outside of the frame. Written on verso is “#7” which implies that this is part of a series. The landscape shows two female figures dressed similarly in white robes with a black headdress. Their dress implies they are religious. They are walking away from a large, square opening that has two pillars and an elaborate arched lintel. There is another white column to their right that is bigger in scale than the door, suggesting it is closer to the viewer. The purple and blue shades imply that the figures are under a shaded building. Signed “Patman” bottom right. Framed behind glass. The frame is in good condition. Not inspected outside of the frame. The identity of the sitter is unknown. She is depicted wearing a black scarf that has red stripes with gold bands at the ends around her head and shoulders and black clothes. She is sitting in a wooden chair in front of an olive-green background. It is unclear where the sitter is located based on the lack of detail in the background. She is holding a bouquet of red, white, purple, blue, and pink wildflowers in her lap. The woman has rosy, pink cheeks and appears happy. Signed “Patman” bottom right. The frame is in good condition. Modern frame is 16” height by 12.5” width. The verso of the board shows part of a still life with a wide, whitish-blue vase of orange flowers on top of a table. The identity of this sitter is unknown. He appears wearing a black cap and jacket in front of an olive-green background from the chest up. It is unclear where the sitter is located based on the lack of detail in the background. Although he has a neutral expression, the overall warm color palette makes him appear friendly. Signed “Becky Patman” top right. Patman usually signs her work with her last name. The use of her nickname implies this portrait was meant as a gift to a friend. The frame is slightly damaged. The verso of the board shows a three-quarter portrait of the same sitter without his cap. This was perhaps done as a study in preparation for the final portrait.
