Landscape painter, Etcher, Porträtmaler, b. 1907 - d. 1998

James McIntosh Patrick, OBE RSA (4 February 1907 – 7 April 1998) was a Scottish painter, celebrated for his finely observed paintings of the Angus landscape and Dundee, Scotland, where he was based for most of his life.

Born in Dundee, the son of Andrew Patrick, an architect and amateur artist who encouraged his son to draw and paint, Patrick studied painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1924 to 1928, studying with Maurice Greiffenhagen, and in Paris. He continued his interest in etching which was very popular in the 1920s and was to prove a source of income for him during the Depression years. A foremost landscape painter, he began his career producing highly finished etchings, but when the market for these collapsed in the 1930s he turned towards painting in watercolour and oil.

Patrick produced portraits and still life works but is known mainly for his paintings of cultivated landscapes in the Scottish countryside. They are often very wide in scope yet meticulously detailed. In this he has been compared to Bruegel. His style was traditional but his use of colour could be bold, as were some compositional aspects of several of his paintings. In Spring in Eskdale (1935) the scene seems to be viewed from a height, giving an almost aerial view, while in Stobo Kirk (1936) perspective is again deliberately but subtly distorted. Less unconventionally, his landscapes frequently make use of lanes, roads, waterways or other features leading from foreground to middle distance or beyond, drawing the viewer into the picture. This compositional trademark can be seen in one of his earliest landscapes, The Three Sisters, Glencoe (1934), Spring in Eskdale, and many of his later works.[citation needed]

Like many artists of the interwar period, he was profiled as an 'Artist of Note' in The Artist magazine, Vol XIV No 3, in November 1937.

He received many awards including the Guthrie Prize and was elected a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1957. He was appointed OBE in the 1997 Birthday Honours

JAMES MCINTOSH PATRICK R.S.A, R.O.I., A.R.E., L.L.D. (SCOTTISH 1907-1998) BRAEMAR CASTLE, ROYAL DEESIDE Signed, oil on board 80cm x 121cm (31.5in x 47.5in) This painting is the original artwork for the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) and London Midland Scottish Railway (LMS) Royal Deeside poster of 1937, which was part of the celebrated ‘It’s quicker by rail’ publicity campaign. The idyllic scene, with Braemar Castle at its centre, was intended to attract people to travel to the area by train, whether along the east coast with LNER or along the west coast with LMS. An example of the resultant poster is in the collection of the National Railway Museum, York (acc.no.1978-8984). Such is the success of its design that it was given a full-page colour reproduction in Richard Furness’s book Poster to Poster: Railways Journeys in Art Volume I Scotland (JDF & Associates Ltd, Tirley, 2009, p. 80).McIntosh Patrick had a long and fruitful relationship with various railway companies and eventually the nationalised railway, from the 1930s until 1960. He encouraged people to catch a train to visit places including Crieff, Dunfermline, Dunnottar Castle, Edinburgh, Loch Leven, North Berwick, Pitlochry and St Andrews. (see Furness op.cit.)We are grateful to Andrew McLean of the National Railway Museum, York for his help with our research.

(SCOTTISH 1907-1998) ASHLEY BRIDGE Signed, watercolour (76cm x 66cm (30in x 22in)) James McIntosh Patrick is famed for his finely-observed paintings and etchings of the Angus landscape. A Dundonian by birth, from a young age he displayed a keen interest in art and was encouraged by his architect father to draw and experiment with etching. At the age of seventeen he enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art where, owing to his creative competence, he was admitted directly into the second year of the four-year degree. It was here, studying under Maurice Grieffenhagen, that Patrick saw his first success, winning several prizes, gaining a post-diploma scholarship and acquiring important contracts for editions of prints. In the following years the etching market declined abruptly, which compelled Patrick to seek employment as a teacher at Dundee College of Art and to diversify into oil and watercolour painting. Patrick’s career was interrupted in 1940 when he was called for service in the Camouflage Corps. As with many artists of the period, World War Two was to impact significantly on his style: travelling extensively with the military, Patrick had to paint ‘en plein air’ resulting in looser and more painterly and impressionistic mark-making. He nevertheless maintained his trademark attention to detail, and the ensuing style is evident in his landscape pictures from thereon. After the War Patrick continued to paint the landscape around Dundee. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1949, and was made a full member eight years later. His influence as a leading landscape artist can still be felt widely, both in Scotland and further afield, and his work is held in collections internationally.

§ JAMES MCINTOSH PATRICK R.S.A., R.O.I., A.R.E., L.L.D. (SCOTTISH 1907-1998) THE LAST OF THE SNOW, NORTH BALLO

        Est: £5,000 - £8,000

§ JAMES MCINTOSH PATRICK R.S.A., R.O.I., A.R.E., L.L.D. (SCOTTISH 1907-1998) THE LAST OF THE SNOW, NORTH BALLO Signed, inscribed and dated 1987 on artist's card verso, oil on canvas (63.5cm x 76cm (25in x 30in)) James McIntosh Patrick is famed for his finely-observed paintings and etchings of the Angus landscape.
