The legendary violinist has been portrayed by many artists, including Delacroix and Ingres. The present portrait shows Paganini middle-aged, sitting before an abstract background, dressed in a dark jacket with a cravat and a medal on the left chest. Patten, a student of the Royal Academy, had made a name for himself as a talented portrait painter. A comparable portrait by Patten shows the violinist in a similar pose, holding his violin. There is a larger restoration to the left collar, the background is overall retouched. The edges are a little rubbed here and there due to rubbing of the frame. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 89.5 x 77.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 76 x 62 cm. George Patten (1801-1865) George Patten was the son of the miniature painter William Patten whose works were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. Thus Patten was first taught by his father before attending the Royal Academy in 1816. Initially he also worked as a miniature painter, but in 1830 he devoted himself to oil painting. During a stay in Italy, Patten visited Rome, Venice and Parma. In 1840 he traveled to Germany to paint the portrait of Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the husband of Queen Victoria. As a portrait painter Patten acquired the patronage of many members of the British nobility and bourgeoisie. In addition, he also created paintings of mythological and biblical subject matter. George Patten iniziò la sua carriera come miniaturista studiando con il padre, ma nel 1828 preferì riprendere a frequentare la Royal Academy per imparare a dipingere a olio. Fece la sua fortuna dipingendo ritratti e questo è uno degli esempi meglio riusciti della sua produzione. Paganini e Patten ebbero un primo contatto epistolare nel gennaio del 1832 (lettera del 31 gennaio 1832) e nell'agosto del 1832 si incontrarono per realizzare l'opera. Questo ritratto che rimase di proprietà dell'artista, venne esposto all'Esposizione Universale di Parigi del 1855 (n. 907). Dopo la sua morte, fu in un'asta di Christie's (Londra, 19 gennaio 1867) e quindi acquistato da un liutaio londinese. Paganini subito dopo richiese un secondo ritratto direttamente all'artista, che è quello che proponiamo in asta; infatti nel novembre del 1832 da Parigi scrisse entusiasta a Patten: amico pregiatissimo, il ritratto che avete voluto farmi è talmente rassomigliante che non potrò mai abbastanza esternarvene la mia soddisfazione. Paganini nel biennio tra il 1831 e il 1834 soggiornò all'estero per esibirsi in concerti e tornò diverse volte in Inghilterra ed è quindi probabile che nel 1834 (data iscritta nel dipinto), in giugno, avesse fatto ritirare il suo ritratto dallo studio di Patten per riportarselo in patria ed era senz'altro a Genova nel 1837, cos' come appare nella lettera di Paganini al marchese Di Negro (lettera del 30 marzo).
