        The trench shelter is ironically labelled as 'Rat's Castle'. A British Tommie with a folding bicycle strapped to his back is kneeling in front of a glowing fire in the trench, shielding the flames with a German soldier's helmet, beneath which can be seen the ghostly image of the enemy's face. A note on the back of the drawing indicates that it was to be published in 'Cycling Today'. Signed in the lower right-hand corner and dated 1916. Framed, mounted and glazed.         Frank Patterson. Take your Choice of Happiness! Four images of country scenes, untitled, but apparently from the North-West, North-East, South-West and South-East of Britain. Signed and dated 1937 bottom right. A panel at the top of the sheet is headed "Cycling Grand Easter Number", the first and third words being pasted on, and the sheet is divided into four by dotted lines North to South and East to West (the sheet marked accordingly), with a striking image of a bicycle in the centre, tinted in blue, and seeming to be hanging down by its rear wheel. There is an ink stamp on the reverse of the sheet dated 10th March 1937. Sheet and image size 19 x 13 1/2-inches (47 1/2 x 34 cm). The sheet margins are dust-marked, but the actual images are relatively unscathed. * This lot is subject to VAT

        Frank Patterson (1871-1952): When We Were Kings of the Road. An elaborate vertical format pen-and-ink drawing for the magazine 'Cycling', the name of the magazine emblazoned across the top margin, with silhouettes of cyclists on either side. Signed and dated 1935 in the bottom margin. The work is sub-titled 'An' all t' way from Lunnun too!' and shows a group of country folk admiring an ordinary (high-wheel) bicycle which has been left propped against the signpost of the Bull Inn. Some foxing and in need of a clean, but an excellent example of the artist's work, with particularly well-drawn details. Framed and glazed, image size 42 x 30.5cm. * This lot is subject to VAT
