Carl Friedrich Patzschke (1813 Leipzig - Berlin 1871), Young girl with hood, lithograph Inscription: Inscribed and signed at the bottom: "Gezeichnet & lithographiert von C. Patzom" and "Steindruck von E. Pönicke & Sohn in Leipzig. ". Description: Little is known about the life and work of Carl Friedrich Patzschke. Various portrait and landscape lithographs by him have survived, but the present sheet shows that he was also capable of wonderful achievements in the genre. The portrait of the young lady in the garb of an imagined Middle Ages shows not only an apt mastery of graphic means, but also a sensitive understanding of the Biedermeier period. It is possible that Patzschkemit this lithograph is oriented to the painting of Louis Ammy Blanc (1810-1885) with the title "The Churchgoer", which was already widely known at the time of its creation in 1834. There he shows a young lady in Renaissance costume in front of the unfinished facade of Cologne Cathedral. In this lithograph, we encounter the same innocent purity as in Blanc's work, who still combines it with the reawakening national pride, the clearest sign of which was to be the completion of the cathedral. Something of this architectural underpinning also appears in Patzschke's work, when the gold-colored frame of the lithograph presents oak leaves and oak cones in neo-Gothic ornamentation. Here, too, the porcelain-like purity of the person is linked with a national feeling. However, at the time of the print's creation, this association seems to have been so absorbed into the type of portrait that there is no longer any need for an explicit link, as in Blanc's case.
