PAUL, Frank R. (1884-1963). Group of 6 painted photographs made for Gernsback's Forecast Magazine. c. 1955-1965. Silver gelatin prints with overlaid paint of various fantastic scenes (stains to mounting boards and institutional notations not affecting images). Size of largest sheet 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. Provenance: Forrest J. Ackerman (1916-2008), American editor, magazine publisher, and science fiction author; acquired by the present owner directly from Ackerman. The friendship between Hugo Gernsback and Frank R. Paul stretched back to 1925, when Paul was commissioned to create the cover art for Gernsback's novel Ralph 124C 41+: A Romance of the Year 2660. Throughout Paul's career he would remain fiercely loyal to Gernsback, following him from publication to publication and creating art for him at a lowered cost. The present illustrations were created for Gernsback's annual publication Forecast, which would feature numerous examples of Paul's artwork within its pages. Accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity dated 8 March 2004 and SIGNED BY FORREST J. ACKERMAN.

Paul is the father of science fiction art, and his paintings have always been among the most desirable to have ever graced a pulp magazine cover. This first issue of Dynamic Science Stories celebrates Paul on the contents page by stating "The editors...felt that it was only fitting that the acknowledged greatest of science-fiction artists should do its inaugural cover." While any Paul science fiction cover is rare, this is an absolute classic, with the artist hauntingly anthropomorphizing the two spaceships into a mother and child (note the striking faces as the fronts of the ships). This painting was in the collection of the editor of Dynamic Science Stories for over fifty years. Two copies of the pulp featuring this cover are included with this lot.

FRANK R. PAUL (American, 1884-1963) Science Fiction, pulp illustration Mixed media and airbrush on board 16 x 13 in. Signed lower right Here is one of the most terrifying and blood-chilling "alien abduction" scenes you'll ever experience, drawn by the grand master of science fiction artists. Frank R. Paul was the Promethean talent who blazed a trail for all that followed in the art of speculative fiction -- from his sublime, star-studded Amazing Stories pulp covers to his unforgettable, incendiary comic book classic featuring a red-hot Human Torch burning though a bank vault door on the cover of Marvel Comics #1. As his fellow science fiction legends have enthused, "Paul remains the undisputed king of the pulp artists" (Sir Arthur C. Clarke), and "Paul's fantastic covers for Amazing Stories changed my life forever." (Ray Bradbury). Once seen, this haunting image is nearly impossible to forget.

FRANK R. PAUL (American, 1884-1963) The Eternal Cycle, Wonder Stories V6#10 cover, March 1935 Oil on canvas 23 x 17 in. Signed lower left Frank R. Paul was the dean of the pulp science fiction artists and he began painting scores of fantastic covers for the Gernsback pulps starting in the twenties. Paul's rocket ships, weapons, and other-worldly creatures were so wildly imaginative that he became the trailblazer for many of the pulp artists that followed. Covers such as this one for "The Eternal Cycle" no doubt inspired the men who became the rocket scientists who finally conquered space flight. Note that Paul's spacecraft is quite similar in size and has several features in common with John Glenn's Friendship 7 capsule. Glenn orbited the earth on February 20, 1962, only twenty-seven years after Frank R. Paul's image of these astronauts hit the newsstands in March, 1935.

FRANK R. PAUL (American, 1884-1963) The Robot Aliens, Wonder Stories pulp cover, February 1935 Oil on canvas 22.5 x 15.5 in. Signed lower right This is one of the finest and most definitive Frank R. Paul science fiction images that exists, and this early vision of an alien robot is one of the fantasy master's finest. When Frank R. Paul met publisher Hugo Gernsback and Amazing Stories was launched in 1926, nearly a decade before this masterpiece was created, popular culture history was made. By career's end, Paul had created over 200 published science fiction covers and more than 1,000 black and white interiors. As Stephen D. Korshak, celebrated author of From the Pen of Paul: The Fantastic Images of Frank R. Paul, so aptly states, "To say that Frank R. Paul is the father of science-fiction illustration art is an under-statement -- his fertile imagination legacy continues to influence the field today." From the Estate of John McLaughlin.

Signed lower left This classic pulp cover painting represents Paul at his finest: a definitive image from science-fiction's pioneering early era, marked by nothing short of Earth-threatening cataclysm, vividly painted by one of the undeniable giants of the genre. On his website, Gallery of Frank R. Paul's Science Fiction Artwork, author Frank Wu notes, "In the same year as the Wonder Stories cover, Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer published their novel, When Worlds Collide, which raises the possibility that one may have inspired the other. In their novel, two planets wander into our solar system, the first causing tidal waves and flooding on the earth, the second planet destroying our world." The cover for the 1979 paperback edition of The Science Fiction Encyclopedia, edited by Peter Nicholls, was based on this apocalyptic scene -- out of the millions of science fiction scenes created through the ages, this was the one chosen as the symbol for science fiction.

In this image, we see ourselves As Mars Sees Us. The accompanying text reads: A Martian reconstruction of the Earthman, deduced from what he can discover of our world by observation and analysis, might very logically be such a creature as is shown here. Inside the pulp, author Henry Gade elaborates: Using his observations with scientific instruments a Martian would reconstruct the Earthman on theory, most likely as artist Frank R. Paul has so cleverly depicted him. Gade continues, Let us 'quote' the Martian scientist: The Man From Earth would be a very fortunate man, considering our own standards of existence. He has at his disposal, the richest, most livable world in the solar system. No doubt, he would be a fat, contented creature with a large body, bullet-head, short legs, and webbed hands and feet. Much of his time would be spent in eating, and his civilization would be simple. We of Mars can well be jealous of Earth and its inhabitants. For a future of millions of years of plenty, full of possibility for intellectual and scientific advance as the planet grows older, is in store for her. A copy of the pulp is included in this lot.
