7" by 9" framed. Rare piece. Edgar Samuel Paxson (1852 - 1919) was active/lived in Montana. Edgar Paxson is known for Indian-frontier-animal, portrait painting. An artist of the vanishing West, Edgar Paxson was on the frontier just before Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, and his 1877 arrival in Montana occurred when Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Indians were warring their way through Canada. Paxson became a close friend of Russell, who arrived in Montana in 1880, and the two men became the state's most famous early or pioneer resident artists. Among the things they shared was a mutual pride at being self taught and a love of expressing aspects of Montana's frontier history. One of his major artistic subjects became the expedition of Lewis and Clark, which he completed in mural form, but his most sought after work are his small watercolors. Another major paintings was Custer's Last Battle on the Little Big Horn, containing more than two-hundred figures locked in mortal combat, and completed twenty-three years after the event. The work is in the permanent collection of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming and is revered for its attention to detail. Some of the Indian Chiefs in that battle served as Paxson's models. He was born in Orchard Park, upstate New York, and the only art training he had was from his father who was a sign painter and carriage decorator. He attended school in a log schoolhouse and also had one year at the Quaker run Friends' Institute in East Hamburg. He was first inspired to go West from reading novels by James Fennimore Cooper and then in 1876, from hearing about the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He went on ahead and in 1879, sent for his wife and child, whom he had left in Buffalo. In the meantime, he worked odd jobs as a cowboy, meat hunter, guard for the Overland Stage, and scout in the Nez Perce war, 1877-78. The family settled in Deer Lodge, Montana, where he worked as a commercial artist and sign painter, including decorating saloons and painting theater sets. In 1881, the Paxsons moved to Butte, where he found more lucrative business, and in 1905, he settled in Missoula. His appearance was described as "in the frontier style, with long hair, full mustache, and pointed goatee". (Samuels 363). His studios in Butte and Montana were popular gathering places for artists visiting the West from other parts of the country. For ten years, he was a member and government scout of the Montana National Guard, and during the Spanish-American War, he was in the Philippines for eight months. During his career, he sought out participants in the Custer battle to paint their portraits. One of his primary sources was the Sioux chief, Gall, who gave Paxson many details of the actual fighting, and their relationship gave the artist much insight into the culture of the Sioux. Paxson generally lauded Indian leaders for their dignity, honesty and strength, and one of his subjects was Charlo, Chief of the Flatheads. For each painting, he changed the pose and the wardrobe combination. Other artistic endeavors include producing eight murals for the Missoula County courthouse of famous western persons and events (1912) and painting a frontispiece titled John Colter, the Discoverer of Yellowstone Park for the book, Your National Parks, by Enos Mills.

Featured in this lot is this water color on paper of an Indian man circa 1890 by Montana Artist Edgar Paxson born in 1852 and died in 1919. The artwork features a wonderfully and professionally crafted water color on paper construction that depicts a Native American man made to be looking right at the viewer. The artwork is signed in the bottom right hand corner and is dated '90'. Edgar Paxson was an artist of the vanishing West. For your bidding pleasure in this lot is a framed collection of five E.S. Paxton Indian Series postcards. Edgar Samuel Paxson (1852 1919) was an American frontier painter, scout, soldier, and writer, who lived in Deer Lodge, Montana. In 1912, Paxson was commissioned to paint eight murals in the Missoula, Montana county courthouse. The murals took 16 months to complete, and still stand in the entrance hall where they were originally placed. The subjects include Sacagawea and the journey of Lewis and Clark. He also created six scenes depicting significant events in early Montana history for the House of Representatives Lobby in the Montana State Capitol. The postcards in this frame are Curley (Custer's Scout), Crow, Sioux, Flathead, and Mis-sou-la. On the back of the frame is paper giving information on the art. The frame measures 21 1/2" x 6 3/4". Edgar S. Paxson Native American Portrait Painting

Montana 1852-1919 Depicts a Native American man with strong side profile, long thick black hair and single feather adornment over a rich blue background. Paxson was a notable artist of the vanishing West born in New York with his early art education received from his father, a sign painter and carriage decorator. The attraction of the West was heightened by Paxon's interest in Wild West novels. In 1879, Paxson made the move and later sent for his wife and child after settling in Montana to work as a commercial artist and sign painter. In 1881, Paxson moved to Butte and then later Missoula. His studios became highly popular attractions for artists visiting the West. Paxson was most interested in painting the portraits of members that participated in the Custer battle, which led to him befriending and painting Gall, Chief of the Sioux.

(21.6 x 16.5cm) Paperboard size: 12 7/8 x 10 1/8 in. (32.7 x 25.7cm) Condition report: In very good condition. The sheet appears very slighly mat burned around the extreme edges of the oval. Occasional spots of early foxing are present in the background but are largely unobtrusive. The paperboard is mounted to the mat so the edges of the front of the board could not be examined in full. The paperboard is unevenly trimmed but this is obscured by the mat when framed. Frame: 16 1/2 x 14 1/2 x 3/4 in.

Custer's Last Stand by Edgar S. Paxson Lithograph Print [139723]

This lithograph of "Custer's Last Stand" by Edgar Samuel Paxson is the scene that history remembers. Paxson spent over 20 years gathering information from Indians that were there as well as survivors from Benteen's contingent. The actual work was completed in 1895 as a canvas of 6 x 9 feet. This lithograph is 16 x 24 inches, and it is single-matted but the matting would need replacement before framing (22 x 31 inches). In Paxson's own words: "... [I] conversed with participants on either side, visited the scene and became as familiar with the ground and the circumstances as with my own home." This 1912 calendar contains an art print lithograph of "When the Indian Worked" by artist Edgar Samuel Paxson. He was a western artist best known for his painting of "Custer's Last Stand" and he died in Missoula, Montana in 1919. A Paxson mural of Lewis and Clark is painted in the lobby of the Missoula County Courthouse. The calendar was advertising the City Carriage and Wagon Shop for general blacksmithing and horseshoeing.
