He is chiefly known for the Austro-Hungarian North Pole expedition in 1872–74 and the discovery of Franz Josef Land. From 1877 to 1879 he studied painting with Heinrich Hasselhorst at the Stadelschule in Frankfurt am Main. From 1880 to 1882 he continued his study of art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.From 1884 to 1890 he worked as a painter in Paris.

      Oil on canvas Germany, late 19th Century Attributed to Julius von Payer (1842-1915) – Austrian-Hungarian explorer and painter Oil paintings by Julius von Payer fetch up to 10.600 euros at international auctions Overall dimensions, framed 90 x 127 cm Good condition This fantastic oil study is attributed to the German Artic explorer and painter Julius von Payer. It shows a polar wolf with unusual dark fur. The beast is shown in front of a white polar waste, which merges in the far background into a white foggy sky. The wolf seems to feel threatened by the spectator as he snarls with its impressive fangs and with its back fur bristled. The large oil study is rendered very naturalistically. The oil study is in good condition. The canvas is slightly loose and should be remounted. The massive frame shows some indentations. The overall dimensions are framed 90 x 127 cm, unframed 82 x 120 cm. Julius von Payer (1842-1915) Julius von Payer was born in 1942 in Schönau, Bohemia. He studied art at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. From 1880 until 1882 Payer continued his studies under Alexander Wagner at the Munich Academy. Also in Munich, the artist created an extensive cycles of paintings of the Franklin Arctic Expedition (1845-1848), for which he was awarded with the Große Medaille der Münchener Akademie.
