They may be either Lonsdale or Westlake designs as they predominately designed windows for the Butes. The designs are: BUTE (Crichton-Stuart) The shield gold background with the chequey fesse within the double tressure flory counter flory is for Stuart. When you look closely you can see the other parts of the achievement of arms. Crest - a red demi lion rampant and over it the motto "Nobilis est ira leonis" for Stuart. "The wrath of the lion is noble". Supporters - a silver horse with a red bridle and a stag with golden antlers. DUKE OF ARGYLL Shield Quarterly 1 and 4 gyronny of 8 gold and black for CAMPBELL 2 and 3 a lymphiad, sails furled and oars in action, all black, flag and pennants flying in red. for LORN. The colours on the shields are used extensively on both watercolours, particularly on the flamboyant mantling. We are grateful to Chloe Cockerill for her help with the catalogue entry.
