Ken Payne Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1938 - d. 2012

Sculptor Ken Payne is famous for Western-themed bronzes depicting Native Americans, cowboys, buffaloes, and wolves in action. Payne was influenced by the Greek and Roman masters, wanting to capture that same majesty in an historic frontier setting. Being born on a 24,000-acre ranch in New Mexico in 1938, he created artworks in his spare time, building a portfolio of Payne animal sculptures for sale. Eventually he went on to mentor young artists, teaching them stories of the disappearing Old West as he sculpted.

Sculptor Ken Payne became a world-renowned, influential bronze sculptor, selling pieces such as Where Smoke Talks (1994) and Stolen Medicine (1992). Ken Payne sculptures have sold in past years in excess of $4,000 each. Indulge your inner cowboy with wild animal sculptures for sale online and at auction.

Property from a Private Collector, Philadelphia and Hilton Head Island Description: Ken Payne, Misery Loves Company, 1992, Painted Bronze, signed, dated and numbered 8/35 on the base, depicting two horses in winter, on a 2 1/4 in. swiveling wood base. Ken Payne was an American sculptor best known for his bronze works depicting the landscapes and history of the Southwest and plains regions of the United States. His sculptures of buffalo, wolves, Native Americans, pioneers, and cowboys often capture a moment of action in some larger narrative, bringing to life an idealized sense of the historic frontier of the Old West. In this way, Payne’s work bears resemblance to the paintings and sculptures of Frederic Remington. Born in New Mexico, Payne became a pilot in 1956, making art in his spare time.
