        Attributed to Robert Peake (c.1551-1619)

        Est: £20,000 - £40,000

Attributed to Robert Peake (c.1551-1619) Portrait of a boy, said to be John Curzon of Kedleston (1598-1686) when a child, standing full length, in red, holding a black hat oil on canvas 121 x 89.5cm The presumed sitter who was the elder son of John Curzon of Kedleston by Millicent, daughter of Sir Ralph Sacheverell of Stanton, became MP for Brackley in 1628-9 and for the county of Derby from 1640-1648, for which he had also been High Sheriff from 1637-38. He was created a Baronet of Scotland in 1636 and of England in 1641 and married Patience Crewe of Steane, sister of the 1st Baron Crewe. They had one surviving son and two surviving daughters. Sir John died at the enormous age of 88, having lived through the reigns of the last Tudor and four Stuart monarchs, as well as through Cromwell's republican Commonwealth. The present portrait was understood by Ben Elwes Fine Art (see Provenance) in 2007 to have descended from the presumed sitter to Assheton Curzon, younger son of Sir Nathaniel, 4th Bt., who was created Baron Curzon of Penn, Viscount Curzon of Penn, grandfather of Richard, 1st Earl Howe and was passed down in that family until sold in the 1940s. This painting closely resembles a 'Portrait of an Unknown Boy' by Robert Peake, sold at Christie's, The Rufford Abbey Sale, on 18th November 1938, lot 46 (see Sir Roy Strong, The English Icon, 1969, p. 241, no. 212). Oil on canvas which has been lined. There are undulations in the canvas at the upper right corner. The paint layer is stable. There are areas of wear and abrasion which would be expected of a painting of this date – notably in the sitter’s hair. There are areas of overpaint across the surface, applied fairly liberally, but the appearance is acceptable from a normal viewing distance. The varnish is glossy and even but brittle with scuffs across the surface. There is mould forming along cracks in localised areas. The frame is in a good condition.

      • English school of the XVI century. Circle of ROBERT PEAKE (1551-1619). Portrait of a lady. Oil on panel.

English school of the XVI century. Circle of ROBERT PEAKE (1551-1619). Portrait of a lady. Oil on panel.

        Est: €5,500 - €6,000

English school of the XVI century. Circle of ROBERT PEAKE (1551-1619). Portrait of a lady. Oil on panel. Measurements: 39 x 29 cm; 65 x 55 cm (frame). Robert Peake, called "the old man" was an important English painter active throughout the end of the reign of Elizabeth I and the first years of the reign of his successor, James I. He trained with the painter Laurence Woodham, beginning in 1565, and with the miniaturist Nicholas Hilliard a few years later. It seems that by the late 1580s he was well established in London, and had a large clientele composed of the upper class and the court. He enjoyed royal favor and devoted himself to the creation of works for Prince Henry Stuart and for King James I, eventually obtaining the position of royal painter, which he shared with John De Critz. In fact, Peake worked in collaboration with De Critz and with another painter, Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger, and with the miniaturist Isaac Oliver, so that sometimes the final authorship of the works attributed to this circle is controversial. The portrait of shows a style, both in terms of composition and pictorial workmanship, closely linked to that of Robert Peake. The woman is depicted bust-length, looking directly at the viewer but with her face slightly tilted. She is dressed in black, although her face is haloed by a splendid white lace ruff characteristic of the Elizabethan period. The red-haired hair, pulled back and covered by a hood richly adorned with pearls, underlines the oval of a heart-shaped face. The attitude is serene, somewhat blasé, as befits. The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess (Greenwich, 1533 - Richmond, 1603) was queen of England and Ireland from 1558 until her death. Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor Dynasty. Daughter of Henry VIII, she was born a princess, but her mother, Anne Boleyn, was executed when she was three years old, so Elizabeth was declared an illegitimate child. However, after the death of her siblings Edward VI and Mary I, Elizabeth assumed the throne. One of the first measurements she took was to establish a Protestant church independent of Rome, which would later evolve into the present Church of England, of which she became the highest authority. Elizabeth was expected to marry, but despite several requests from Parliament, she never did. As Elizabeth grew older, her virginity made her famous and a cult grew up around her, celebrated in portraits, pageants and literature of the time. The queen took charge of a country divided over religious issues in the second half of the 16th century. During her reign, England enjoyed great cultural splendor, with figures such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe; also important figures such as Francis Drake and John Hawkins. He maintained frosty relations with Philip II, with whom he waged a war that ruined both countries economically. His 44-year reign was the fifth longest in English history, behind those of Elizabeth II, Victoria I, George III and Edward III.

Robert Peake (circa 1551-1626 London) Portrait purported to be of Lady Elizabeth Pope, née Watson, half-length, wearing an elaborately embroidered dress trimmed with lace and a pearl necklace and earrings

        Est: £20,000 - £30,000

Robert Peake (circa 1551-1626 London) Portrait purported to be of Lady Elizabeth Pope, née Watson, half-length, wearing an elaborately embroidered dress trimmed with lace and a pearl necklace and earrings oil on panel67.9 x 49.6cm (26 3/4 x 19 1/2in). Provenance: Private Collection, Spain, having been acquired by at least the present owner's great-grandfatherAlthough previously attributed to William Larkin the present portrait can be considered to be part of a trope which begins in around 1590 with the portrait of Elizabeth Vernon, Countess of Southampton at her dressing table at Boughton House and continues through to the portrait of Frances Howard at Welbeck Abbey, which is probably the best example of this type, the present picture seeming to lie somewhere between the two. The black thread depicted here, which normally links the heart and the hands, looks to be broken and may possibly be an allusion to a death and would fit with the traditional identification of the sitter being Elizabeth Watson, who was an heiress at this date. The depiction of her long hair hanging loosely down, was a contemporary symbol of virginity and brides sometimes wore their hair down in this way, one high-profile example being Princess Elizabeth, the future 'Winter Queen', at her marriage on St Valentine's Day in 1613.The traditional attribution to William Larkin may arise from the fact that Larkin painted four portraits of the Pope family, including the portrait of Elizabeth Pope's son, Thomas, 3rd Earl of Downe, which was sold in these rooms, 5 July, 2017, lot 45, which came from Wroxton Abbey, near Banbury in Warwickshire. Peake, who was a close neighbour of Larkin's father, was part of the same artistic circle of Henry Prince of Wales and is known to have painted both Lady Elizabeth and her unmarried sister-in-law, Lady Anne Pope, circa 1615: their portraits which also came from Wroxton are now in Tate Britain (inv. nos. T00067 and T00068). Elizabeth Watson, an heiress, married Sir William Pope of Wroxton on 13 December 1615, and it is thought that her portrait in Tate Britain may have been painted in connection with this event.
