      • Charles Willson Peale,  American 1741-1827-  Portrait of George Washington
        Jul. 09, 2024

Charles Willson Peale,  American 1741-1827-  Portrait of George Washington

        Est: £15,000 - £25,000

Charles Willson Peale,  American 1741-1827-  Portrait of George Washington, bust-length, wearing a dark blue coat with gold epaulettes and cream facings, a cream waistcoat, white stock and blue sash;  watercolour on ivory, oval, 4.1 x 3.4 cm., held in a silver and metal mounted medallion. Ivory submission reference: 8CAVGCKL.  Note:  This rare and important portrait miniature depicts George Washington (1732-1799) as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Gazing calmly and confidently out at the viewer, and wearing the bold blue sash which signified his Commander in Chief status, Washington is portrayed as an officer at the height of his military career, a decade before he would become the first President of the United States.  Renowned American portraitist Charles Willson Peale painted Washington several times throughout the latter's illustrious military and political life, and the present miniature appears to be derived from an initial sitting in 1779, when the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania commissioned Peale to paint a portrait of Washington commemorating the General's recent victories at the Battles of Trenton (1776) and Princeton (1777). The initial, full-length portrait that resulted from this sitting is now in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts [1943.16.2]. Peale went on to paint several more versions of his popular portrait, both in oil and in miniature, most of which are now held in museum collections. These include the full-length portraits in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gift of Collis P. Huntington, 1897 [acc. no. 97.33.], the White House Collection, Washington D.C., and the Palace of Versailles [MV 4560]. A portrait miniature of Washington now in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts [1996.256] shows particularly strong similarities to the example presented here.  Maryland-born artist Charles Willson Peale briefly apprenticed as a saddler before establishing himself as a portrait painter, becoming acquainted with fellow American painters John Hesselius (1728-1778) and John Singleton Copley (1738-1815). Peale also spent several years in London, studying with American-born artist Benjamin West, PRA (1738-1820). It was in Britain that Peale became trained in the art of painting portrait miniatures, and he continued to import his supplies from Britain even after his return to the United States.  During the Revolutionary War, Charles Willson Peale enlisted in the army, and fought alongside many of his sitters as a soldier, rising to the rank of Captain. He carried a case of miniature painting supplies with him during military campaigns, which allowed him to paint his fellow officers between battles. Writing to Benjamin West in 1783, Peale reflects: “I have done more in miniature than in any other manner, because these are more portable and therefore could be kept out of the way of a plundering enemy.” Peale is thought to have painted over 130 miniatures during the Revolutionary War, including portraits of other important figures such as Henry Knox (1750-1806) and Nathanael Greene (1742-1786), but it is for his iconic portraits of George Washington that he is best remembered.  We are grateful to Emma Rutherford for confirming the attribution to Charles Willson Peale on the basis of in-person inspection.

Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society, p. 138, no. 530. Biographical note: "Charles Willson Peale was one of the most important American artists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He helped found the first art academies in the United States and forged a uniquely American style of painting. In Colonial-era America, there were few options for men inclined toward the visual arts to receive training in painting, sculpture, and architecture. Charles Willson Peale, born in Maryland in 1745, was a visionary artist who set out to change the artistic landscape of the United States by establishing an academy on American soil so that aspiring artists could be trained at home rather than having to travel to Europe - an expensive and politically undesirable option...In 1794, he established the Columbianum, the first art school in the nation. This 'American Academy of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture and Engraving' enjoyed an opening exhibition at Independence Hall. Though it did not last for very long, it was soon replaced when Peale helped to found the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts ten years later...Peale was also heavily involved in the workings of his own museum, called the Peale Museum, which was the first institution of its kind in America. Opened on July 18, 1789 in Philadelphia, the collection showcased artifacts of natural history alongside portraits of famous Philadelphians." (Source: Woodmere Art Museum) PROVENANCE: Private Knoxville, TN collection. By family descent through Mrs. John Hemsley Johnson (Emma), whose husband was the great-grandson of John Johnson, Sr., the fourth chancellor of Maryland from 1821-1824. John Johnson Sr. is the 4th great-grandfather of the present owner. A miniature portrait of Johnson, painted by Charles Willson Peale's brother, James Peale, is also featured in this auction.

Charles Peale 1741-1827 Portrait Elias Boudinot IV

        Est: $10,000 - $50,000

This is a very important and historic Portrait of Elias Boudinot IV in circa 1776-1778 attributed to Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827). The piece is from the Anne Burnham Moore Estate collection with documentation as to her direct relation to Elias Boudinot IV and is signed on the reverse with what appears to be Charles Peale. The piece was professionally restored by Philip Rosenfeld, Director at the Pennsylvania Art Conservatory. Elias Boudinot IV (B.1740-1821) was the fourth President of the United States Continental Congress from 1782 to 1783. Boudinot was a Member of the Continental Congress (1777-1788; 1781-1784), served in the First Congress of 1789, he signed the “Treaty of Paris” with Great Britain ending the Revolutionary War as at the time he was the acting President. Boudinot was also the Commissary-General of Prisoners and in 1795 was appointed as Third Director of the United States Mint by George Washington. The painting is attributed to Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) along with the other available portrait of Boudinot in the Princeton University Collection by Peale. The painting is said to be done in circa 1776 when Boudinot would have been 36 years of old. The piece is from the Anne Burnham Moore Estate collection, a direct relative of Elias Boudinot IV. Included is the documentation of Anne Burnham Moore’s direct lineage to Elias Boudinot IV (from 1952-1953), note written by Anne explaining the pieces origin, The Boudinot Mansion Commemoration Pamphlet from 1943, news clipping from the Boudinot Mansion Commemoration, and Elias Boudinot by Donald W. Whisenhunt a New Jersey Historical Commission book from 1975. The Anne Burnham Moore family lineage aligns with the official The Boudinot Mansion 1943 pamphlet which shows a George R. Chetwood as being Boudinot Mansion owners circa 1835. This is the earliest portrait of Elias Boudinot IV and the only known portrait from a private collection to be available for sale. At the time of the painting Boudinot would have been serving as the Commissary-General for Prisoners as appointed by General George Washington, his close friend, was commissioned as a Colonel in the Continental Army and appointed the New Jersey delegate in the 2nd Continental Congress. The piece was previously sold by North American Auction Company in August 2016 and was sent to Philip Rosenfeld of Pennsylvania Art Conservatory where it was professionally preserved and restored and was images sent and submitted for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Museum collection. Frame is 33.25”x30.25” and artwork is 29"x26”. Believed to be marked on the back, "Charles (possibly) Peale" and "Boudinot" in very light signature as shown. The collection from Anne Burnham Moore also included a portrait by Thomas Sully circa 1839 of Elisha Mann Warner (son of Captain Samuel Warner of the Providence Marine Society and direct relative of Anne Burnham Moore and Boudinot), circa 1815 Providence Marine Society Member Certificate from Captain Samuel Warner the aforementioned and relative of Boudinot, State of Rhode Island Civil War Recognition circa 1869 for George Henry Burnham (1832-1907) direct relative to Anne Burnham and Boudinot, as well as 18th Century silverwork, cameo jewelry, and furniture. The lot includes the following documents: The Boudinot Mansion circa 1943 Opening Ceremony booklet, original index card from Anne Burnham Moore stating direct relation and the portrait dating to circa 1776, photocopy of family lineage, original circa 1953 memorandum to Anne and here sisters stating and documenting family history, including Edwards Direct Line from Elias Boudinot #1 list and second Boudinot-Edwards lineage all from a typewriter, Boudinot Mansion news clippings from the 1943 dedication, and photocopies of most the papers. The family lineage photocopy was taken by our company of the original hand written example as the family wanted to keep it. Original consigned directly from the Anne Burnham Moore estate. Portrait of a Philadelphia Lady, Attrib. Charles W. Peale.

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Attributed to Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827). A Philadelphia Lady, possibly Margaret Steele Milledoler, c. 1817. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches, unlined and on original stretcher. This sensitive portrait of a Philadelphia lady descended in the Hallowell family, and was loaned, along with a Peale portrait of the Reverend Philip Milledoler (1775-1852), to the American Portraits exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, 1924-1925. At the time, the lender believed the work to be of Jane Mercer, an ancestor. But new research suggests it is the portrait of Margaret Steele (1790-1852), who became the second wife of Milledoler in 1817. Margaret's father was a trustee of the "Old Pine Church" in Philadelphia. Milledoler was then serving as its pastor, and the couple may have sat for Peale to celebrate their union. The features of this sitter closely resemble those depicted in a c. 1830 portrait of Margaret Steele Milledoler. By the 1950s, the pair of portraits were split, the Peale portrait of Reverend Milledoler descending to Morris Hallowell of Greenwich, CT, while this work went to another family member in Philadelphia until sold in 2004.

Portrait of a Philadelphia Lady, Attr. Charles W. Peale

        Est: $5,000 - $15,000

Attributed to Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827). A Philadelphia Lady, possibly Margaret Steele Milledoler, c. 1817. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches, unlined and on original stretcher, within carved and gilded 19th century frame. But new research suggests that it is the portrait of Margaret Steele (1790-1852), who became the second wife of Milledoler in 1817.

Peale, Charles Wilson (1741-1827) Revolutionary War-dated ALS requesting astronomer, inventor, and State Treasurer David Rittenhouse to pay for Nails used to repair Independence Hall Rare Autograph Letter Signed "Chas W Peale" as one of three members of the "Committee of Assembly," one page, 6.75" x 3". [Philadelphia], January 29, 1780. Also signed "Wm. Hollinshead" and "Jacob Schreiner." To David Rittenhouse Esqr. Uneven right edge. Mounting strip at top edge on verso, no show-through. Endorsed on verso "Jacob Greiner" beneath manuscript "Feb. 2d. 1800 Recd the Contents." Fine condition. In full, "Please to pay unto Mr. Jacob Greiner the Sum of Four Hundred and Seventy eight pound, Seven Shillings & Six pence, for Nails Used on the Stadt House and public Stables." On February 11, 1785, Maryland members of the Continental Congress James McHenry and William Hindman forwarded to Maryland Governor William Paca, a motion of the Delegates of Maryland which stated, in part, "By the eighth Article of the Confederation, it is declared 'That all Charges of War and all other Expences that shall be incurred for the common Defence or general Wellfare and allowed by the United States in Congress assembled, shall be defrayed out of a common Treasury.' It would seem that Congress having so many Towns in their Choice, in which they may hold their Sessions, and at a very inconsiderable Expence erect a Federal Stadt-House & proper Offices, if the Erection of such Stadt-House and Offices should become necessary..." The term "stadt house" was eventually anglicized to "state house" by the early 19th century. In 1730, the Pennsylvania General Assembly appointed a committee to direct the expenditure of £2,000 on a new "Stadt house." Constructed between 1732 and 1756, it served as the meeting place for the general assembly of the province of Philadelphia. From 1775 to 1783 (except for the winter of 1777 - 1778 when Philadelphia was occupied by the British Army), it was also the meeting place for the Second Continental Congress. It was in the Assembly Room of this building that George Washington was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army (1775) and the Declaration of Independence was adopted (1776). In the same room, the design of the American flag was agreed upon (1777) the Articles of Confederation were adopted (1781), and the U. S. Constitution was drafted (1787). The Pennsylvania State House soon became known as Independence Hall. In an article in Vol. 43 No. 1, "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society," 1953, titled "The Independence Hall Group," Edward M. Riley, Chief Park Historian, Independence National Historic Park Project, writes, "When the [Pennsylvania] Assembly relinquished their room on the first floor to the Congress in 1775, they moved into the small room in the southeastern corner of the second floor. Although the enlargement of its membership, by the State Constitution of 1776, from forty-one to seventy-two Representatives made this room inadequate, nothing appears to have been done to improve conditions until after the British occupation. At this time the room was almost doubled in size by removing the partition between it and the long room to the Chestnut Street wall. This made the room the same size as the old Assembly room they had left. The new quarters seemed to be so comfortable that the Assembly occupied it for some time after Congress left in 1783." On October 7, 1779, a committee was named by the Assembly "to direct the repairs of the chamber of the general assembly." On March 24, 1780, the committee made a report on their expenses. The accounts of payments of these expenses are itemized in the "Journal of the House of Representatives of Pa., 1776-1781." Riley reports that on February 17, 1780, 19 days after this letter was handwritten by Peale and signed by him, Hollinshead, and Schreiner as the members of the "Committee of Assembly," Robert Allison, carpenter, was paid £511.17.5 "for carpenters work done at State House." Undoubtedly, this payment to Jacob Greiner is also listed in the journal. David Rittenhouse was Treasurer of Pennsylvania from 1777 to 1789. When Benjamin Franklin returned home from Paris in 1785, he built significant additions to his house. Greiner is listed in the expenses of Franklin's payments: "Jan. 5 1787 Paid Jacob Greiner in full for Nails 16.19.2_." Although more nails must have been used to repair Independence Hall in 1780 than to add to Benjamin Franklin's house in 1787, it is interesting to compare the two payments to Greiner: £428 by the government, £16 by Franklin. It was Franklin who said "If you'd be wealthy, think of saving, more than of getting" and it was Franklin who knew the benefits of "early to bed and early to rise..."

Portrait of Elias Boudinot IV by Charles W. Peale

        Est: $5,000 - $50,000

This is a very important and historic Portrait of Elias Boudinot IV in circa 1776-1778 attributed to Charles Willson Peale. The piece shows wear indicative of its early age (240 years old) and is in its original frame. Frame is 33.25”x30.25” and artwork is 29"x26”. Believed to be marked on the back, "Charles (possibly) Peale" and "Boudinot" in very light signature as shown.
