Mary Jane Peale American, 1827-1902 Grouse in Wheatfield Bears signature MJ Peale and dated 1868 on reverse Oil on canvas 16 x 20 inches Literature: Lyman Allyn Museum, New London, CT, American Romantic Paintings of the 18th and 19th Centuries from the Collection of Lee B. Anderson, Feb. 26-Mar. 26, 1961, noted as an additional work from the collection, identified as Partridge Family. The present work was identified as Grouse in Wheatfield in a checklist of works from the Collection of Lee B. Anderson provided in 1967 to the Inventory of American Paintings, Washington, DC. Art historian Anne Sue Hirshhorn writes, "There are two documented paintings of similar subjects. One is illustrated in the Kennedy Quarterly, as '93 Partridge Family, Oyster Bay, L.I.' The artist's notebook contains a description of a second subject, 'A Partridge Pictures moving ones which were hatched under a hen and "hid" a week - I painted them and had a glass box.' This appears to be a third version of partridges by Mary Jane Peale. Eliza Burd Patterson married Rubens Peale on March 6, 1820. Mary Jane was born in New York while Rubens was managing the New York Peale Museum." We extend our thanks to Anne Sue Hirshorn for her kind assistance in documenting this lot.
