        Est: $200,000 - $400,000

Circa 1846. Oil on canvas. Signed 'Rembrandt Peale' (lower left). Documents: Original invoice and correspondence. Appraisal by Wildenstein & Co. Inc., New York dated Nov. 15th, 1928. Note: When he was eighteen, Rembrandt Peale painted a portrait of Washington from life in the presence of his father, Charles Willson Peale. During the remainder of his career, Rembrandt demonstrated a near obsession with Washington and replicated this famous portrait seventy-nine times. The stone oval derives from the seventeenth-century European fashion for tromp l'oeil stone casements, a format Peale may have observed during periods of study in Europe.

        Est: €9,000 - €10,000

REMBRANDT PEALE (Bucks County. United States, 1778- Philadelphia, 1860). "Male Portrait in Neoclassical Fashion, ca. 1815. Oil on canvas. Attached is a report by Ximo Company (CAEM Art Centre, University of Lleida). It has slight repainting and restorations. It has a French frame from the end of the 18th century, with slight faults and adapted. Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 83.5 x 68 cm (frame). The angle from which the personage is portrayed, the slight degradation of the background where a play of tonalities can be appreciated, the brushstroke, the brightness of the whites and the clothes, invite us to think that it is a work belonging to the American school. The painting is closely related to Rembrandt Peale's portrait of his brother Rubens, now in the collection of the National Gallery. The son of the painter Charles Wilson Peale, Rembrandt Peale grew up in an artistic environment, watching his father portray the great figures of the day such as George Washington and Benjamin Lincon. At the age of eight he began to work in his father's studio, together with his brothers Rubens and Raphaelle, thus giving rise to one of the most important dynasties of painters in the United States. Rembrandt Peale was part of a context of intellectual and economic development in a Philadelphia liberated from the British, where the leading intellectuals of the day gathered and innovative projects were established, such as the art museum founded by his father and which Rembrandt himself later moved to the city of Baltimore. Rembrandt studied with the master Joshua Reynolds, alternating his education with trips to the great European art centres of France and England. It was the artist Benjamin West who encouraged him to follow the path of portraiture, studying the work of painters such as John Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart, followers of West. His style was defined by a naturalistic aesthetic with a classical heritage that led to the renewal of the style in the United States. Today his works are to be found in important private and public collections, such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, the National Gallery in Washington and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among others.

Rembrandt Peale (American, 1778-1860) George Washington, circa 1855 Oil on canva

        Est: $200,000 - $300,000

Rembrandt Peale (American, 1778-1860) George Washington, circa 1855 Oil on canvas 36 x 29 inches (91.4 x 73.7 cm) Signed lower left: Rembrandt Peale Property from the Collection of Melvin ‘Pete' Mark Jr., Portland, Oregon PROVENANCE: The collection of Mrs. Katrina Trask Peabody; Berry-Hill Galleries, New York; Acquired by the present owner from the above. EXHIBITED: Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York, 1922. Intentionally rivaling fellow portraitists John Trumbull, Gilbert Stuart, and his own father, Charles Willson Peale, Rembrandt Peale made it his professional mission to render "the national portrait and standard likeness" of George Washington. In 1787, as a boy in Philadelphia, Rembrandt had met Washington, whom Charles Willson had recently celebrated in George Washington at the Battle of Princeton, and in 1795, at the age of seventeen, he requested from his father his first portrait sitting with the president; the resulting George Washington, an accomplished naturalistic study, focused on facial details over costume and captured an aging but proud man. Over the next two decades, Rembrandt Peale painted various likenesses of Washington after other artists like the sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, and in 1823, he verbalized his determination to create the official portrait: "No Artist ever found his pride more strongly excited by magnitude and interest of his purpose than mine to rescue from oblivion the aspect of a Man who would forever be venerated as the ‘Father of his Country.'" (C. Hevner, Rembrandt Peale 1778-1860: A Life in the Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1985, p. 66) Peale's purpose was fueled by commercialism, however, as much as nationalism, as a popular portrait had the potential to generate a demand for replicas. The 1824 George Washington, Patriae Pater realized Peale's goals: it memorialized the president as a classical hero, depicting him in velvet finery against an ethereal ground and set within an oval trompe-l'oeil stone frame, carved with an oak wreath and the head of Jupiter. The portrait also served as the model for Peale's subsequent lucrative Washington commissions, including lithographs, equestrian portraits, and numerous smaller "porthole" portraits. The present work exemplifies this "porthole" portrait, otherwise known as the George Washington Copy, which derived from the Patriae Pater and solidified Peale's reputation as the foremost 19th-century Washington painter. Around 1846, Peale began producing the Copy, featuring the Patriae Pater portrait bust within a simplified stonework frame, and available in different sizes (the standard was 25 x 30"), in military or civilian dress, and with orientation to the left or right. For the rest of his career, he solicited commissions for the Copy through pamphlets and a traveling lecture, "Washington and his Portraits." An 1857 article in The Crayon describes the successful lecture Peale delivered at the New York Historical Society: "At the close of the reading Mr. Peale exhibited various portraits of Washington, together with one of Mrs. Washington, all painted by himself; the pictures were brilliantly lighted, and so arranged as to be seen to great advantage. The remarks upon the portraits were interspersed with anecdotes, personal reminiscences, and historical facts, possessing marked interest, as they were listened to with unflagging attention."(Ibid., p. 88) In its 1850s context, Peale's George Washington would have reminded audiences of the nobility and unity of America's founding era, indeed, a foil to the growing anxiety of the country on the brink of the Civil War. The provenance of the present work is as remarkable as the portrait itself: The painting comes from the collection of Melvin ‘Pete' Mark, Jr., in Portland

Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) Portrait of George Washington (1732-1799) in Presidential Costume Oil on canvas, framed (35 in. x 27 7/8 in. (sight)) Provenance From the Estate of former Pennsylvania Governor William W. Scranton and First Lady Mary L. Scranton Freeman's Auction, April 25, 2018, Lot 149 Private collection Note In 1795, Charles Willson Peale arranged for his 17 year-old son, Rembrandt, to accompany him to a portrait sitting with George Washington. Though never fully satisfied with the portrait that resulted from that sitting, Rembrandt used it as a model for replicas. Twenty five years later, after a tour of France and exposure to the neoclassical style, Rembrandt Peale sought to create a new "standard likeness" of Washington, one that expressed the first President's "mild, thoughtful & dignified, yet firm and energetic Countenance." In 1823, he created his first "Porthole" painting, showing Washington within a stone oval window. Rembrandt painted numerous replicas of the "Porthole" George Washington, as well as "Porthole" Martha Washington, until the 1850s. relined, craquelure, probably has gone through several restoration campaigns, scattered retouch throughout, to sitter's face- especially right side and hair, under neck, nose and lips, some retouch to jacket, faux stone reserve, and background, modern frame.

REMBRANDT PEALE (Bucks County. United States, 1778- Philadelphia, 1860).

        Est: €35,000 - €40,000

REMBRANDT PEALE (Bucks County. United States, 1778- Philadelphia, 1860). "Male Portrait in Neoclassical Fashion, ca. 1815. Oil on canvas. Attached is a report by Ximo Company (CAEM Art Centre, University of Lleida). It has slight repainting and restorations. It has a French frame from the end of the 18th century, with slight faults and adapted. Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 83.5 x 68 cm (frame). The angle from which the personage is portrayed, the slight degradation of the background where a play of tonalities can be appreciated, the brushstroke, the brightness of the whites and the clothing, invite us to think that it is a work belonging to the American school.

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Attributed to Rembrandt Peale (American, 1778-1860) Portraits of Robert Henry and Sarah Ann Hodges Boorman oil on canvas Each 30 x 25 inches. Provenance: By descent to the present owner. Robert H. Boorman (1790-1861) and Sarah Hodges Boorman (1807-1886) were married in 1828 in County Kent; he was 38, and she was 20. They came to New York the same year, settled, and were the parents to ten children. James Boorman (1783-1866), brother to Robert H. Boorman, in partnership with John Johnston, formed the firm of Boorman & Johnston, which almost entirely controlled the Dundee linen trade from Scotland. The firm was one of the major exporters in New York of Virginia tobacco and one of the largest iron importers into the United States from Sweden and Russia. Boorman & Johnston later focused on Manhattan land development, and were responsible for Washington Square North, and the Tenth Street Studio Building, the first modern facility designed solely to serve the needs of artists. The building became the center of the New York art world for the remainder of the 19th century.  Boorman served as director, vice-president and president of the Hudson River Railroad Company. He was also one of the founders of the Bank of Commerce, and was one of the original stockholders of New York University. He retired from active business in 1855. The Institution for the Blind, the Protestant Half-Orphan Asylum, the Southern Aid Society, and the Union Theological Seminary were among the recipients of his benevolence. Other portraits of the Boorman families were painted by John Wesley Jarvis (1781-1840), C.R. Parker (1799-1849) and Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827). A portrait of James Boorman by Thomas Prichard Rossiter (American, 1818-1871) is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. Charles Coleman Sellers, great grandson of Charles Willson Peale, was the librarian of the Waldron Phoenix Belknap Jr. Research Library of American Painting in Winterthur, Delaware, from 1956 to 1959, after which he became editor of the American Colonial Painting magazine. Sellers consulted for the 1983 exhibition Charles Willson Peale and His World at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He wrote in 1979 that he was in agreement with Dr. Cook with the attribution of the present portraits of Robert Henry Boorman and Sarah Ann Hodges Boorman to the hand of Rembrandt Peale.

Rembrandt Peale (American, 1778-1860) portraits of Mr. & Mrs. Richard C. Dale ---- Richard Colgate Dale Jr. (1810 - 1876) and Elizabeth M. Woodruff Dale (exact dates unknown), oil on canvas, signed "Rembrandt Peale 1857", each bears exhibition labels from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, mounted in original carved and gilded frames bearing labels for James S. Earle of Philadelphia, 30-3/4" x 25", framed size 40-1/2" x 35-1/2", good condition with age cracking, various gesso damages on frames. ----- Named for his father, Dr. Richard Colgate Dale Sr. (1770 - 1818) From the Hopkinson Family History - Dr. Dale was a captain in the First Delaware Militia Brigade, Second Regiment, in July, 1799. He was a member of the Third Regiment in February, 1800. On May 26, 1802, the Governor appointed him captain of a company of light infantry in the Second Battalion of the Third Regiment of Delaware Militia, and captain of the Eighth Company, May 3, 1808. He was a private in the Delaware Artillery, May 1 to May 29, 1813. Dr. Dale also served as a surgeon under General Wilkinson in the division commanded by General Andrew Jackson. At the end of the war he received a captain's commission in the regular army, which he resigned, however, to resume his practice in Wilmington, Delaware. He served as sheriff of New Castle County, and was a Master Mason. " In regards to Richard Colgate Dale Jr., "Soldier Dick," as he was called, was only seven years old when his father died, but he seemed to feel that the responsibility of the family rested upon him. - His mother, with her seven little children and two orphaned nieces, went to live with her father in Philadelphia, following her husband's death. He attended Mr. Goodfellow's School in Philadelphia, but sacrificed a college education to go to work when he was fifteen years of age in order to help provide for the family. He became a large silk importer and in the course of his work travelled extensively in the South and West by stagecoach, horseback, or boat. Through his diligence and business integrity he acquired a large fortune, but it was swept away by the War Between the States." From the Francis Hopkinson Family Archives
