RENE LOUIS PEAN (France, 1875-1945). "Woman with a Fan. Charcoal and gouache on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. It presents light damp stains in the margins that do not affect the drawing. Size: 30 x 20 cm; 43,5 x 33,5 cm (frame). French painter, watercolourist, draughtsman and poster artist. René Pean produced numerous posters for the world of show business and entertainment. His oil paintings, watercolours and pastels take up fashionable themes: classical or Spanish dancers, landscapes, views of Montmartre, scenes of gallantry, but also portraits or family scenes. In 1889, he became an apprentice lithographer in Jules Chéret's workshop. In 1891, he also studied lithography at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. At Chaix, his production of posters for the theatre, tourism, department stores, modern manufactured products, is abundant: about 150 posters between 1895 and 1913. He also drew for the press in newspapers such as Le Sourire , L'Illustration , Nos loisirs or La Rampe .

This charming poster was created in 1899 to promote an operetta in three acts titled, "Shakspeare!". The plotline has been lost to the passing of time, but the image remains charming and fun. Rene' Pean (1875-1955) was a painter, illustrator, and a poster artist. He spent a good part of his career working for, and under, the tutelage of Jules Cheret and in the studios of Chaix Printers. His romantic aesthetic was very stylish and pleasing for the era. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

RENÉ LOUIS PÉAN (Paris, 1875 - Ermont, France, 1945). "Young man with mask". Charcoal on paper. Signed in the lower right margin. Measurements: 57 x 47 cm; 70 x 60 cm (frame). French painter, poster artist and illustrator, René Louis Péan was a student of Jules Chéret, one of the masters of French poster art. René furthered his studies at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. Throughout his career as an artist, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants (1921-1949), at the Salon de Lyon (1921-1925), at the Salon de Hivern (1944-1946) and at Georges Petit's gallery (1909-1933). Most of the time, his works are starring elegant young women, as well as perfectly detailed landscapes and monuments. Two of his productions were reproduced in the plates of the "Maîtres de l'affiche: À la place Clichy" (1898) and in "Aux trois quartiers" (1899). After fighting in the war in 1914, his production showed a decline, leaving aside the posters and focusing on the realization of chromolithographic advertising works, in which three-quarter length female portraits are represented, whose clothes and hairstyles vary depending on the composition.

René furthered his studies at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Throughout his career as an artist, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants (1921-1949), the Salon de Lyon (1921-1925), the Salon de Hivern (1944-1946) and Georges Petit's gallery (1909-1933). Most of the time, his works are depicted with elegant, feminine young women, as well as perfectly detailed landscapes and monuments. Two of his productions were reproduced in the plates of the "Maîtres de l'affiche: À la place Clichy" (1898) and in "Aux trois quartiers" (1899). After fighting in the war in 1914, his production declined, and he abandoned posters and concentrated on producing chromolithographic advertising works, in which he depicted three-quarter-length female portraits, whose clothes and hairstyles varied depending on the composition.
