Chaix, Paris DESCRIPTION: Joseph Oller had a knack for Parisian entertainment: he constructed a roller coaster on the Boulevard des Capucines called “Montagnes Russes.” It was a big hit. So after co-founding the Moulin Rouge in 1889, he decided to add a roller coaster to the concert hall. The “Nouvelles Montagnes Russes” was erected in the garden of the venue, and according to this poster, it was not only a thrilling attraction, but also an opportunity for Montmartre’s most fashionable guests to strut their stuff above the crowds. Alcazar d'Été. 1902.

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: RENÉ PÉAN (1875-1940) SIZE: 34 1/4 x 49 in./87 x 124.4 cm PRINTER: Imp. Chaix, Paris DESCRIPTION: Like many other Parisian music halls of the time, the Alcazar d'Été presented tableaux vivants as a form of entertainment. Here, in a performance organized by Robert Paxton, scandalously clad nymph-like women loll about in the grass while adoring a statue of Pan: their spirit guide in this raucous affair. These performances were actually quite controversial, and not just because they were so provocative. What terrified audiences most was that the goddesses so long admired in art now embodied a physical human form. "Her transformation from an immobile figure of artistic beauty into a hypersexualized stock character of the Parisian music hall compounded the influence she wielded over the public... Thanks to the music hall and the forms of mass culture associated with it, la femme nue emerged out of the artist's relatively obscure studio and entered the public limelight, evolving from a statuesque figure posed on stage to an acting, speaking, dancing subject who complicated the socially coded categories and practices informing one's understanding of art, morality, and gender" (Uncovering Paris by Lela F. Kerley, p. 71). (Art Nouveau; Cabaret)

ARTIST: RENÉ PÉAN (1875-1940) SIZE: 41 1/4 x 62 3/4 in./107.3 x 159.3 cm PRINTER: Imp. Chaix, Paris DESCRIPTION: Let's go! The botanical garden on the grounds of the Grand Trianon was developed by Louis XV in the 1760s. By 1774, Louis XVI inherited the throne, and he gave the château and its surrounding park to his 19-year-old Queen, Marie Antoinette. It became her private reprieve, and only a select number of guests were allowed to enter—not even Louis XVI was given access. After the overthrow of the monarchy in 1792, the Trianon was declared national property—and by 1801, dances and festivals on the grounds led to neglect and vandalism. We can presume that by the time this theatrical poster was made, everything had been neatly tidied up and made inviting to the public—and what a jubilant experience that must have been! Olympia : Maquette. ca. 1899

        Est: $7,000 - $9,000

Artist: RENÉ PÉAN (1875-1940) Size: 33 1/2 x 47 in./85 x 119.4 cm Similar in style to many of the works by Chéret -- who, incidentally, created the poster for the opening of the Olympia in 1893 -- this joyous design is a variant of the published poster Péan made for the establishment in 1899 (see PAI-XXXVI, 492). Whereas in the final version the focus is on the glamorous audience enjoying a performance, this original composition focuses intently on the prima ballerina receiving favors from an adoring male crowd.

One of a handful of Arabian-themed dancers painted by Péan, all the woman from this series glance off to the right, their bodies arched in every direction as colorful bits of fabric billow out behind them. The artist had a way of presenting women in an openly erotic way without making them appear cheap or dirty -- she is a sweet Salomé, a dainty Delilah.

"The scene is Stockholm. Thylda's fiancé is Otto, and her father is the same Baron von Gondremarck who appeared as a young man in Offenbach's La Vie Parisienne . . . The baron decides that before the wedding his future son-in-law should have the same opportunity for adventures in Paris that he had. He sends him off but Thylda makes him miss his train. He goes anyway . . . in a dream. On awakening, he finds that the dream has sufficed and is content to confine his travels to a honeymoon trip" (French Opera, p. xxiv).
