Frame size: 18 1/4 in. x 16 1/4 in. Philip Pearlstein is an American painter widely regarded as one the greatest figurative artists of the last century. PearlsteinÕs work is often composed of multiple nude models in complex interiors, featuring contrasting colorful objects and unusual, oblique perspectivesÑmodels are often glimpsed from behind room dividers or objects such as an electric fan, or in between the wings of a kite. He was born on May 24, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA and studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology's art school both before and after World War II, and there met Andy Warhol. After graduating in 1947, the two moved together to New York, and during this early time, Pearlstein painted a portrait of Warhol that today can be found in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. His earliest work consisted of in Abstract Expressionist landscapes, most notably those of Italy where he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study. After taking nude modeling classes, he soon veered away from abstraction to realism, and focused on the human figure thereafter. Pearlstein has had many solo exhibitions and was a Guggenheim fellow in 1969. In 2008, he was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy in New York, NY. Splendid, nuanced and filigree impression with strong platemark, wide margin and scooped margin on the left side. - One of 10 Artist's Proofs aside the edition, our sheet the 10th copy. - Philip Pearlstein's career began together with Andy Warhol. The two had been friends since they studied together in Pittsburgh in 1945 and were equally enthusiastic about art. In 1947, the two visited New York City together for the first time and subsequently settled in the metropolis in 1948. Pearlstein's artistic beginnings were in the field of commissioned work for advertising clients and magazines, including "Life". Pearlstein's personal style developed early on; the style was photorealistic with Pop Art influences, the motif often depicting nudes. In Pearlstein's work, the figures are not personalised; the artist often cropped the figures in such a way that the faces were barely visible - thus removing components from his works that could distract from the essentials. In his mature and well-balanced works, he showed the sculptural dimension of the bodies without appearing vulgar. Pearlstein's works are represented in renowned institutions worldwide. Landwehr, S. 62. A. "Life".
