Otto Pech, Poster ‘Altenburg Playing Cards‘, 20th C

    Est: €80 - €220

Colour lithography on paper Germany / Altenburg, 20th century Design: Otto Pech (PIX) (1882-1950) – Altenburg sculptor and painter Original colour lithography of an advertisement poster for Altenburg playing cards Dimensions: 89.5 x 69.5 cm Good condition This poster advertises the playing cards by Altenburg. Altenburg is the city of the card makers and of the skat game. The producer, founded in 1765, is still the German market leader today. The illustration depicts the typical figure of the joker. He holds up all four colours of the playing game. The entire lithography is composed in the colours blue, red, black and beige with the name ‘Altenburg’ on the lower rim. The pseudonym ‘PIX’ by the artist Otto Pech is located in print in the lower left corner of the illustration. The condition of the poster is damaged by age-related signs of wear. The paper is strongly yellowed on the edges, and folds and cuts are displayed. The poster has not been cut to size, therefore the cutting marks are still visible around the rim. The dimensions are 89.5 x 69.5 cm. Otto Pech (PIX) (1882-1950) Otto Pech (PIX) was born in Altenburg. He was mainly active in his hometown as graphic artist, sculptor and card draughtsman. The quartet card game ‘Black Peter’ realised his breakthrough. The wall interior equipment of the farmer’s parlour of the town hall of Altenburg is a creation of his. In addition, he designed several rooms of the playing card museum at Altenburg Castle. A small room devoted to the life and work of the artist is located in the museum.
