Whilst there he studied at the Science and Art School in the town from 1919 to 1923.He left Saunders' office in May 1927 to take up an appointment as chief assistant to the Borough of Newark, working under J H Clarke AMICE. He was still there when he was admitted LRIBA on 16 October 1945, his proposers being Ernest Frear, Evan Wendall Roberts and Henry Hardwick Dawson, all of Nottingham.
