Paul Peel Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Portrait painter, Landscape painter, b. 1861 - d. 1892

Artist Paul Peel was an accomplished Canadian-born painter who was known for his excellence in academic art and realism. As one of the first successful Canadian painters of his time, artist Paul Peel focused on nude figures, high society, rural landscapes, and genre art. Peel was a classically trained artist, studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins before continuing his art education in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Academie Julian.

Living from just 1860 to 1892, Peel’s success as an artist was short-lived, though his life and work are still celebrated today. Originals and replicas of Paul Peel's academic art are for sale worldwide, while many of his most celebrated works, like Daisies, Venetian Bather, The Young Botanist, Aurora, and Portrait of a Woman, are displayed in museums and galleries throughout Canada. Invite conversation from your guests by prominently displaying a uniquely Victorian academic oil painting from Invaluable.

PAUL PEEL, R.C.A.LADY IN SATIN CAPE WITH PINK ROSE, CA. 1880oil on canvassigned 18 ins x 14 ins; 35.6 cms x 20.3 cms Provenance:Private Collection, OakvilleVictoria Baker suggests that the sitter in this portrait may be the artist’s elder sister, Mildred, as Paul Peel (1860-1892) often used his siblings as subjects for his early portrait paintings. Stylistically, Lady in Satin Cape can be dated to circa 1880, when Peel’s father, John Robert Peel Sr., was using his London, Ontario business connections to both encourage and promote his son’s artistic skill with portrait commissions, whilst seeking out local buyers. The Lady in Satin Cape is rendered with a style that emphasizes Peel’s key painterly interests at this time with keen attention to surface light effects - the figure’s complexion is porcelain-like in its perfection - and the compositional choice of placing the figure in the outdoors.Estimate: $25,000–30,000

With an enthusiasm bordering on zealousness, his father encouraged him to submit his earliest work - his juvenilia - for exhibition at numerous local and regional art fairs and related cultural events. In September 1876, while still in his mid-teens, Peel entered this lot into the London Western Fair. It was among the first works to bring Peel wider public attention.  Baker writes that St Bernard, along with a portrait of one of Peel's sisters which he also exhibited at that fair "were universally admired." She continues: "What struck the visitor, according to period reviews, was their naturalism and life-like rendering."  Peel won  first prize in the amateur class. St. Bernard "went missing" for more than 130 years until it was brought to the attention of Igor Holubizky at Museum London.  The curator notes that the painting was purchased by the current owner from an antique shop in the village of Paradise, Pennsylvania - 80 kilometres west of Philadelphia - which acquired it through a local estate. In 1887 Peel had been accepted to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Holubizky speculates that "a possible scenario is that Peel took the painting with him to Philadelphia, as an example of his work, for academy entrance, and because it was small enough to carry.”According to a typewritten label on the reverse, this painting “was painted from life and represents the head of his pet dog...”

Given the date of this work, it is reasonable to assume the sitter is his fiancée. Victoria Baker writes: "As with other members of his family, Peel gave expression to his close personal relationship with Isaure in his art.  Between 1885 and 1886 he executed at least three portraits of her." While this lot is not one of those three recorded portraits, like his drawing of her of the same year in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Peel is successful in expressing "a more introspective side of (the sitter’s) personality.”While the date would suggest Isaure as the most likely subject, the figure also bears a resemblance to Peel's younger sister Clara Louise as depicted in Reading the Future (collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery).Still other experts have speculated that the sitter could be Peel’s sister Mildred, who accompanied the artist back to Paris in December 1883. The siblings spent the summers of 1884 and 1885 in Pont-Aven, where Peel subsequently met Verdier. Mildred Peel is identified as the model for several oil studies from this period.

April and May of that year was spent in Pont-Aven, as he had the previous summer, although the artist returned to Canada in July and remained there for the rest of that year.

After receiving training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Peel departed for Paris in 1881, where he established a studio and took instruction from Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des beaux-arts. Peel's work was influenced by two major schools of artistic thought: academic Salon painting and the new freedom of Impressionism. Peel's focus was primarily on figure painting, and both these schools' impact can be seen in this alluring painting. It is a formally posed studio work, yet a strong sense of white light - a tenet central to Impressionism - which he developed in his plein air sketches, is manifest here. Family members were often used as models for Peel's work, and this is likely one of his sisters - the young woman bears a strong resemblance to Clara Louise, who posed for his 1883 painting Reading the Future. With its luminosity, soft pastel palette and exquisite rendering of skin tones, Meditation is a tender and beautiful work.
