      (ATTRIB.) CATHARINA PEETERS (Flemish, 1615-1676)

      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Pair of seascapes, circa 1650 oil on canvas h. 12-3/4 w. 23 in. (each) overall: 19-1/2 x 29-1/2 in. (each) both signed with artist monogram ‘C.P.’ and dated 1650 Catharina Peeters was the sister of Bonaventuur Peeters, Jan Peeters I, and Gillis Peeters. All were Flemish painters noted for painting seascapes. While Catharina is mentioned in several key books on Flemish artists, little is known about her. The only other extant work we have found is a monumental canvas depicting a naval battle that sold at Christie's Amsterdam on June 23, 2015, lot 94. That painting's palette and treatment of flags and foreground figures appears to be consistent with the present pair. Provenance: Castle Hill, Ipswich, Massachusetts, the historic estate and summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Teller Crane, Jr., owner of the Crane Plumbing Company of Chicago.; By descent to his son, Cornelius Crane; By descent to his adopted daughter, Cathalene Crane Widdoes, NYC; Gifted to the current owner, 1982 Condition: both with wax relining, replaced stretchers, some pigments
