Orhan Peker (1927-1978), Mixed Media 'Fire Fighters', 1973

      Est: €4,800 - €6,000

Mixed Media (oil, watercolour, gouache) on paper, framed in a mat Turkey, 1973 Orhan Peker (1927-1978) - Turkish painter Signed and dated lower right 'Orhan 73' Expressive colouring Overall dimensions, framed: 91 x 74 cm; size of the sheet: 65 x 48 cm Very good condition Provenance: from a German private collection Orhan Peker is considered one of the most important Turkish painters of the 20th Century; his works on paper fetch up to 40.000 euros at international auctions This expressive artwork was created by the Turkish painter Orhan Peker in 1973. A black, nearly abstract composition of hands, feet and heads is painted in oil on a red background. Only upon closer inspection the silhouettes of two firemen are distinguishable, who together aim a jet of water onto the blistering red surrounding them. During the time when Orhan Peker created this work, radical political changes took place in Istanbul; of which many were decided on the streets of the city. With this intriguing depiction, Peker, who was interested in documenting current events, might have aimed to capture the uncertainties and threats faced by the citizens of Istanbul. The work is in very good condition. The mat shows some minimal foxing and the paper is slightly browned on the back. Also at the back, along the lower edge of the paper are some small stains caused by humidity. Due to the colour application the paper is slightly wavy. The work is signed and dated lower right 'Orhan 73'. The overall dimensions are framed 91 x 74 cm; the size of the sheet is 65 x 48 cm.
