Born in Grobogan, Purwodadi in Central Java, the socially sensitive painter played his duty not only as an artist but also as an active social critic. He visited many poor and exploited areas throughout his artistic career and was enlightened by his careful observation of the people and society, using art to voice grievance for the people. He studied at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, a city that remains a major cultural hub in Indonesia. Pekik’s works traveled in various parts of Indonesia and overseas, and he became better known after one of his works at an exhibition in Yogyakarta was sold for one billion rupiah. His art is typically Javanese style, socially satirical and realistic-expressive, integrated with the techniques he learned from his teachers, Hendra Gunawan and Widayat, as well as the ones inspired by Affandi. Astri Wright, an observer of Asian modern art, considered Djoko Pekik’s work to be unique because it raised themes that were different from most painters of his time.1 These works are characterized by simple figures with strong outlines and exaggerated forms, set in bold compositions and often presented in earthy tones and colors, which enhance the satirical and grotesque portrayal of his subjects, such as this portrait featured in this auction of a reclining female figure with vulnerability in the eyes. The appeal of his work lies in the way he captures the essence of an experience through his expressive style that carries a profound sentimental weight, usually from an intimate perspective that can build resonance with viewers, rather than merely depicting a subject’s external appearance. Pekik usually dilutes his oil paints sufficiently and applies them to the canvas with wide, wet strokes.
