      Mildred W. Pelzer (Iowa, 1890-1985) January Circa 1935. The oil on artist's canvas board by this Iowa regionalist known nationally for her work as a muralist and illustrator is signed lower left and titled verso. During the 1930s a number of Mildred Pelzer's Midwest genre scenes were used as the cover art for Better Homes and Gardens and other magazines. During this same time she completed murals in The Hotel Jefferson and the Waverly, Iowa Post Office under federal commissions including the WPA. She also studied under and served as publicist for Grant Wood and worked with Marvin Cone. Board measures 14 x 18 with a framed size of 16.75 x 20.75 inches.       Mildred Pelzer was a well-known Iowa City, Iowa Midwest regionalist known nationally for her work as a muralist and as an illustrator. During the 1930s a number of her Midwest genre scenes were used as the cover art for Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. In this depiction of a country crossroads, note how the utility lines are low and rudimentary as are the primitive wooden signs that served as country stop signs in the day. Signed lower right, this circa 1935 oil on canvas measures 24 x 28 inches, with an overall frame measurement of 31 x 35 inches. Excellent frame.
