She designed cards for Fortnum & Mason, fabrics for Liberty and stage costumes for C B Cochran, and taught fashion at St. Martin's School of Art, with students including  Bruce Oldfield.

      § Muriel Pemberton (British, 1909-1993) Women's fashion designs pencil (5) h:54 w: 38 cm Other Notes: Muriel Pemberton invented art-school training in fashion in Britain and, in doing so, affected attitudes to fashion design throughout Europe. In 1928 she gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art; she became interested in the idea of a diploma in fashion after a chance encounter with a stranger who admired a dress of her own design that she was wearing. She was allowed to develop her own course in fashion at the Royal College of Art and gained the first diploma in fashion there in 1931. Whilst at the Royal College of Art she became engaged to the Welsh artist, Stanley Lewis, and she features in one of his most famous paintings, Hyde Park, holding a parasol, but they did not marry. Muriel Pemberton later taught fashion design and drawing at Saint Martin's School of Art, becoming Head of Fashion and Design at the School. Pemberton was an innovative teacher, encouraging her students in experimental fashion - her students included such luminaries as Katherine Hamnett and Bruce Oldfield.
